She was the daughter of Samuel Sylvestus Ray and Leila Chandler Ray. A native of Ridgeway Community, Jackson County, Mrs. Abney resided in Athens since her marriage in 1938 to the late Howard Teasley Abney, Sr. She taught primary school prior to her marriage. Mrs. Abney was an active member of Athens First Baptist Church and its choir. As a member of Athens Pilot Club she was recognized in 1999 for 35 years of volunteer service to Athens Regional Medical Center. Following her husband's death, she continued to manage his independent insurance agency in the Southern Mutual Building. Mrs. Abney was preceded in death by her husband, her son Howard Morton Abney, Sr., her daughter Rosemary Abney Sheuring and her thirteen siblings. Her survivors include two sons, Dr. Howard T. Abney of this city and Dr. Ray Chandler Abney of Brattleboro, Vermont, and a daugter, Mrs. Jane Abney Hawkins of Riverside, California, nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Athens First Baptist Church with interment at Oconee Hills Cemetery. Rev. Jon Appleton will officiate.
