He graduated from Brooks County High School and obtained a bachelors in animal science from the University of Georgia. He was owner and operator of Farmers Feed and Seed and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a past member of the Lions Club, past chairman of the Greene County Board of Education, past bank director at the Bank of Greensboro, past music director at First Baptist Church, Greensboro and a member of First Baptist Church. Vaughn, age 87, of 2261 Ridgeview Rd., Bowersville, GA., died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at a local area hospital after an extended illness. Mr. Vaughn was born September 28, 1912, in Hart Co., GA. to the late Andy Harrison and Leila Williams Vaughn. He was a retired farmer and carpenter. Mr. Vaughn was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Lavonia, GA. Mr. Vaughn is survived by his wife, Alice Lankford Vaughn, of the home, one daughter, Martha Vaughn Ayers, Canon, GA, two sons, Jimmy Vaughn and Daniel L. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 Mardie Carew Athens Mardon (Mardie) Anne Carew, 62, of 750 Agricultural Drive, died Sunday, March 12, 2000, at her home. Born in Toronto to Marjorie (Pooler) Carew and Donald F. Carew, Mardie became a resident of Athens in 1969. A graduate of Ohio University and the University of Georgia, Mardie completed both a Masters Degree and advanced graduate studies in education. She was a classroom teacher and educational consultant in northeast Georgia, spending 35 years in service to public education. Her involvement in the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens was an important part of her commitment to the community. She served as president, participated on numerous committees and sang in the choir. Mardie's caring concern for her extended family was pivotal in her life. She was dedicated to enhancing and strengthening her family's bonds. She is survived by her mother, Marjorie Carew of Amherst, MA; brother, Don Carew of Amherst, MA; sister, Susan Carew-Rice of Highland Village, TX; son, Richard Climo of Sacramento, CA; daughter, Marjorie Climo Shelnutt of Athens; two grandchildren, Meisha Climo and Beau Climo, both of Sacramento; 8 nieces and nephews, and 11 grandnieces and nephews, with one soon to arrive. A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Athens at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, March 15, 2000. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 14, 2000 Polly Smith Moore Athens A memorial celebration is planned for Polly Smith Moore, 92, of Athens at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2000, at First Presbyterian Church of Athens. Mrs. Moore was born in Luella, Henry County, Georgia on January 4, 1908. She was married to the late Joseph Julian Evans of Warrenton and later to the late James Parker Moore of Atlanta. She died on March 10 after an extended illness. Mrs. Moore, a retired teacher, studied piano and music education at LaGrange College, graduating in 1927. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Mercer University and a Master's Degree in Music Education from the University of Georgia. She was honored by the LaGrange College Alumni Association with the Distinguished Service Alumni Award in 1997-1998 and received the Distinguished Service Alumni Award from the Georgia Music Educators Association in 1994, an organization for which she had also served as past president. Other awards received were the J.W. Fanning Humanitarian of the Year Award from Athens Regional Medical Center in 1995 and the Kiwanis Hixson Award in 1997. She volunteered as an Auxiliary Pink Lady at Athens Regional Medical Center and was an honorary member of the Kiwanis Club of Athens, serving as song leader and pianist for the group. Mrs. Moore was an active member of P.E.O. and served that organization as Corresponding Secretary, Vice President and President, as well as coordinating all musical activities for their state, national and international conventions when held locally. She enjoyed membership in the Atlanta Historical Society and served as a past member of the Board of Trustees and President's Council of her Alma Mater, LaGrange College. Other activities included serving as an Elder and Choir member of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens and was Director of their Cherub Choir until the summer of 1993. Mrs. Moore is survived by her son, Walter Theodore ''Ted'' Evans, Sr. of Watkinsville, GA and a step-daughter, Carol Carithers of Athens; daughter-in-law, Winona Evans and step son-in-law, Robert Carithers; four grandchildren, Katrina Evans and Ted Evans, Jr. of Watkinsville and Alicia Nazario and Laura Cox of Atlanta; and four great-grandchildren.
