OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2000 Leo McCool Amaker Athens Leo McCool Amaker, 79, of 350 Beechwood Drive passed away Wednesday December 13, 2000 at Saint Mary's Hospital after an extended illness. She was born September 20, 1921 in West Blockton, AL, the daughter of the late Nellie Chaffin and Benjamin Lee McCool. Leo attended Troy State University and received her postgraduate degree from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. She taught elementary school for many years in Tallysee, AL and Dalton, GA. Mrs. Amaker, beloved mother and grandmother, is survived by her husband Daniel Belton Amaker, sons and daughters-in-law: Daniel Belton Amaker, Jr. and Mary Beth DuBose Amaker of Columbia, SC, Leo McCool Amaker and Sonja Riley Amaker of Westfield, NJ, and grandsons: Daniel Richardson, Macdonald Rhodes and Belton DuBose Amaker of Columbia, SC and Daniel William Amaker of Westfield, NJ. After moving to Athens in 1957, Mrs. Amaker was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School and participating in the Chancel Choir. Leo was a charter member of the Altar Guild and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She was an avid bridge player and active in many bridge clubs. Leo was a past President of the Salvation Army Auxiliary Board, the Elks' Aidmore Auxiliary, the Beechwood Garden Club and the Federation of Community Clubs. Pallbearers will be her nephews: Sidney and Cary Livingston, Bill Hammond, Les Campbell, Billy and William Amaker, Wesley and Michael Busbee.
