Adams Athens Photo: obits Dr. Henry Earl Adams (69) died Monday, October 16, 2000. A native of White County, Georgia, and Morgan Hill, California, Dr. Adams was the son of the late James L. Adams and Opal Roncelli. During the Korean conflict, he served in the United States Air Force. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley in 1957 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Louisiana State University in 1960. Dr. Adams was a member of the faculty at the University of Georgia for 36 years, during which time he served as a Research Professor and was the Director of the Graduate Training Program for Clinical Psychology. Throughout his career, he was recognized as a distinguished scientist and expert clinician. He was a past President of the Southeast Psychological Association, the author of many scientific papers, book chapters and text books, and the founding editor of the Journal of Psychopathology and Behavioral Assessment. Most recently, Dr. Adams served as editor of The Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology, now in its third edition; this handbook is used in graduate programs across the nation. He also was called upon as a forensic specialist, testified in state and federal courts, and served as a consultant to the National Veterans Administration Hospital as well as the American Psychological Association. Even so, he managed to conduct an active clinical practice and research program to teach and mentor graduate students. Survivors include June Adams, his wife of 48 years; one son Eddy and his wife Kathy; two daughters and their spouses Karen and Keith West, Kim and Mike Bohn; and six grandchildren. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:15 p.m. on Monday, October 16, 2000 James Brantley Harris Athens Photo: obits James Brantley Harris of Athens, Georgia, was laid to rest Saturday, October 14, 2000, at Nacoochee United Methodist Church Cemetery, with immediate family members attending. Presiding was the Rev. Lyndon Eubanks, pastor of Nacoochee United Methodist Church. James was born October 7, 1940, in Marietta, Georgia, where he attended Osborne High School form 1954 to 1958. He attended the University of Georgia where he received his Bachelor and Master of Science degrees (Forestry) in 1962 and 1964, respectively. He was also a Teaching/Research Assistant during this time. From 1964 to 1965 he was 4-H Agent with the County Extension Service, University of Georgia, in Walker County. In 1965 he and Emily moved to Athens, Georgia, where he became the Extension Training Specialist with the University and continued this position until 1971. James received his Doctorate of Education degree (Personnel Management/Adult Education) in 1970 from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. In 1971 he became the Extension Personnel Development Coordinator and continued in this role for a year. From 1972 to 1989, Dr. Harris was Head of the Personnel and Leadership Development Department at the University. In 1974 he was Co-President of Barnett Shoals Elementary School PTA. He took Advanced Management Development Courses at North Carolina State University Graduate School and graduated from Leadership Development Institute, The Center for Creative Leadership, Greensboro, North Carolina. He was selected as a participant in Leadership Georgia in 1976 and in 1977 and was elected Vice President and reappointed to the Board of Directors for three years. He was Vice President of Hilsman Middle School PTA in 1979. During the 1980's he developed and coordinated the Extension Management Development Institute, the University of Georgia Supervisory Development Program, the University of Georgia County Commissioner Training Program, and the Federated Garden Clubs of America Leadership Program, as well as provided orientation training to United Way's ''Loaned Executives'' Program. He completed the Georgia Certified Public Manager Program (Board of Regents/State Merit System) and was certified in 1980 (re-certified in 1984). During 1982-1984 he was a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce Steering Committee that developed the Leadership Athens Program. He helped create Leadership UGA, the Youth Leadership Athens, and the Georgia Leadership Roundtable Programs. He was President of the Cedar Shoals Touchdown Club in 1984. He was a member of the Clarke County Personnel Board 1985-1987 and of the Clarke County School Board 1985-1989 (President 1987-1989). In 1989, James became Associate to the Director of the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, where he remained until he retired, in 1992, as Professor Emeritus of Extension Education, The University of Georgia. From 1994 to 1998 he was Management-Leadership Training Specialist and teacher (on contract basis), for The Center for Continuous Improvement, and Athens Technical Institute. In 1997 he was certified by Georgia Department of Technical and Adult Education to be lead instructor for Certified Customer Service and Certified Manufacturing Specialist Programs. He worked with business, industry, and educational institutions in the following areas: Strategic Assessment, Workstyle Analysis/Knowing Self and Others/DISC Profile System, Interpersonal Skills, Conflict Management, Cultural Change Awareness, Trust/Responsibility/Commitment, Problem Solving/Decision Making, Team Building, Effective Performance Appraisals, Presentation and Facilitation Skills, Effective Meetings, Stress Management, Personal Wellness, Image, and Customer Service. In 1998 he began teaching with Piedmont College on a contract basis and continued to teach until his death. He was a member of the Athens First Baptist Church (Sanctuary Choir, Pianist, Music Committee, Flower Committee, Chairman of the Stewardship Committee 2000); American Cancer Society Board of Directors (Clarke-Oconee Unit); Georgia Prostate Cancer State Board of Directors; and the UGA Retired Faculty Association. James and his wife, Emily, were married for 36 years and have 4 children: Cindy (35), Brantley (33), Beth (28), Rob (26); and 4 granddaughters: Megan (10), Jordan (5), Jessica (3), Victoria (3).
