He was a farmer and retired from Webco Company in Toccoa where he was a welder. Mr. White was a member of the Georgia National Guard, the Primrose Masonic Lodge # 79 Bowman, Georgia, where he received his 50 year pin. Mr. White was a member of the Holly Springs Baptist Church and attended the Vanna United Methodist Church. He was married to Fay Elizabeth McGarity White for 69 years. Survivors include his wife, Fay Elizabeth McGarity White, Royston; daughter and sons-in-law, Delores and Virgil Ayers and Carol and Earl Sayer, all of Royston; a sister, Lovie Glenn, Atlanta; a brother, Walton White, Gadsden, Ala.; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Tarpley, a native of Greene County and a resident of Oconee County for the past 40 years, died July 17, 2000. She was 92. Mrs. Tarpley was the daughter of the late Mr. William Franklin and Mrs. Mildred Kilgore Parham. She was a member of the Young Harris Memorial United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Mrs. Tarpley was preceded in death by her late husband Mr. John Harry Tarpley. She is survived by two sons: Marcus W. Tarpley of Augusta and Joe P. Tarpley of Stone Mountain; one grandson: John Q. Tarpley of Grayson; three granddaughters: Frances T. Braswell of Kennesaw, Sarah T. Dilbeck of Marietta and Heather L. Tarpley of Stone Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tarpley's education career in Georgia included teaching and administrative positions in Madison County (teacher), Buckhead Elementary School (teacher, principal), Chase Street School (teacher), and David C. Barrow Elementary School (principal). Among the many positive focuses was her belief in each child reaching his or her full potential. While her career as a formal educator may have ended, Mrs. Tarpley's role as a teacher continued in her roles as a wife, mother and grandmother. She taught others through her own life's experiences the royalties of love and respect for nature and people. She will long be remembered for her devotion and generosity to her family, her appreciation for people's presence, her genuine kindness to those she encountered, and her acknowledgement that her strength was derived from her deep faith and love for God. Born January 13, 1921, in Madison County, Ga., he was a son of the late James Richard and Bertha Smith Hardman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of Ardennes, the Battle of the Bulge, and Central Europe. He retired from WABCO after thirty years of service. He was a member of the Stephens County Board of Education from 1968-1972. He was also a member of Grove Masonic Lodge #652 and Leon Williams VFW Post #4346. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church where he had served as Chairman of the Finance Committee, Co-Chairman of the Cemetery Fund, member of the Board of Trustees and the Adult Sunday School Class. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Floyd Hardman and Herschel Hardman.
