Dr. Cohen received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Auburn University and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Michigan. He was a professor of statistics at the University of Georgia for 31 years, retiring as professor Emeritus. He was a member of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics, Mathematical Association of America, International Statistical Institute, and Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi and other honorary organizations. He served as a consultant to NASA in the Apollo program. He was a U.S. Army veteran, retiring as colonel in the Army Reserves. He made numerous mission trips with the Baptist Partnership Evangelism Program. He was a member of Wynnbrook Baptist Church, Columbus. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Wynnbrook Baptist Church. Mrs. Benson was a daughter of the late Sara Ada and Lowery Gabel. She was preceded in death by one brother, Otto Gabel, and four sisters: Josephine Sherrick, Iva Dale Richardson, Golda Spesard, and Pansy Inez Ozier. Mrs. Benson and her late husband Eb Benson were born and raised in Greenup, Illinois and spent most of their lives in Central Illinois before moving to Athens in 1976 and opening Benson's Antiques on Broad Street in Conjunction with Satin Touch Furniture Refinishing, then owned and operated by grandsons David and Richard Aguar. She retired in 1981 and lived with her daughter and son-in-law from 1984 until July 1988, when she entered a local retirement home. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a son, Dr. James Robert Benson of Jacksonville, Florida; a daughter, Berdeana Louisa Aguar of Athens; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was a grandson of Anna ''Sue'' West of Athens, and the late Jessie West; and James and Florence Hardeman of Athens. Mr. Collier was a 1988 graduate of Madison County High School and in 1990, he joined the United States Army. For three years, he was stationed in Seneca Army Depot in New York, and the next three years at Fort Clayton, Panama, Central American, during which time he obtained the rank of Sergeant. He was a member Colbert Baptist Church and was recently attending Hebron Baptist Church, Dacula. He was currently employed as manager of Right Choice Staffing Service in Suwanee.
