Walker died Monday of congestive heart failure at the age of 87. He had been in declining health the past few months. Walker entered the care of Gwinnett Extended Care nursing home in May 1999 because of health problems. As a prep runner for Georgia Military Academy (now Woodward Academy) in 1933, Walker established his most famous record, a state mark in the 200 meters that stood for 63 years. After an All-American career at Georgia Tech, Walker began running nationally and internationally, touring Europe with U.S. track stars. He won 36 of 36 sprint races, and set world records in three events -- the 60-yard indoor dash, the 150-yard dash and the 180-yard dash. Walker earned a spot in the '38 Olympics, but he didn't compete because of a knee injury he suffered in a car accident. -- Associated Press Šopyright 2000 Athens Newspapers Inc.
