She was a graduate of Franklin County High School and Piedmont College, and was a music and English teacher for 18 years in Franklin County and a employee with the U.S. Postal Service for 22 years. She was a member of the Carnesville Women's Club, the Order of the Eastern Star and Cross Roads Baptist Church where she was the pianist and organist for 50 years and past president of Cross Roads Baptist Women. Born April 1, 1917, in Athens, Ga., he was a son of the late John Nelson and Lucille Smotherman Wier. He lived most of his life in Athens and was a wholesale food broker with the Webb-Crawford Company. Mr. Wier was a World War II Army Veteran and was a past Exalted Ruler with the Elks. He was honored this year as being the oldest member of Central Presbyterian Church of Athens, together with his brother, Johnny. He was also a member of the Open Door Sunday School Class of Gainesville First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Marianne Adair Wier of Gainesville; a daughter, Marilou Bordonaro of Alpharetta; a son, Thomas Edward Wier Jr. of Roswell; three granddaughters, Megan and Cory Bordonaro of Alpharetta, and Jameson Wier of Roswell; two brothers, Johnny Wier of Athens and Emmett Wier of Urbanna, Va.; one sister, Sue Mosely of Bel Aire, Maryland. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:36 p.m. on Sunday, August 20, 2000 Mamie Ruth (Heald) Hoover Athens Mamie Ruth (Heald) Hoover, age 93, died August 19, 2000, in Athens, Georgia. A native of Iowa, Mrs. Hoover grew up in Plainfield, Indiana, and lived in the Athens area for the past 30 years. She was the daughter of Clara Peacock Heald and Everett David Heald. She was a graduate of Blackburn College and the University of Illinois. She received her Master of Science degree in Home Economics from The Pennsylvania State University. She taught Home Economics in the public schools of Illinois and Indiana where she created an all-boy cooking class in the 1930s. She later taught sewing in the adult education program of Montgomery County, Maryland. Mrs. Hoover was a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron and the American Association of University Women. She was a past president of the Athens Chapter of the AAUW. She was a charter member and honorary life member of the Bishop Method of Clothing Construction Council. As a member of Tuckston United Methodist Church, she chaired the United Methodist Women and several circles. She contributed more than 2,000 hours to the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, August 24, 2000, at Tuckston United Methodist Church at 11 a.m., followed by a reception where the family will greet friends. Mrs. Hoover is survived by her husband, Thomas Hoover of Winterville, Georgia; two brothers, Wilfred Heald and Loren Heald, both of Plainfield, Indiana; a daughter, Carol Hoover, and her husband, Paul Pattison, of Montara, California; a son, Morris Hoover, and his wife, Lois Hoover, of Keller, Texas; a granddaughter, Rebecca Hoover, and her mother, Kathryn Hoover, of Winterville, Georgia. Mr. John Henry Beard, 94, of 31 John Beard Road, Danielsville, Ga., died Saturday, August 19, 2000, at Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston, Ga. Mr. Beard was born December 28, 1905, son of the late Sam Easton and Eugenia Collins Beard. He was a retired truck driver and farmer and was of the Holiness Faith. His wife was the late Ina Watson Beard. Mr. Beard was the last surviving member of his generation. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Walter Walls, Danielsville; three grandchildren, Terry Walls, Sam Walls and Polly Penson, all of Danielsville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Beard was preceded in death by four brothers, Nelson Beard, DuPree Beard, Jim Beard and Reese Beard; and three sisters, Ruby Hughes, Eudie Gunnells and Janie Carey.
