OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:25 a.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2000 Mary Caroline Whorton Kinser Athens Mary Caroline Whorton Kinser died at the age of 88 on March 21, 2000, at her home in Athens, Georgia. Fondly known as ''Tula,'' Mrs. Kinser was the widow of Palmer Denton Kinser and the mother of three children, Carolyn Ingraham, Virginia Hall, and Palmer Denton Kinser, Jr. She was also grandmother to three, Katherine Ingraham, Eleanor Hall and Emily Hall. Mrs. Kinser taught piano and violin in Athens for over 20 years and her teaching career of band, strings, violin and piano spans over 70 years. She was a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1931 where she was an artist pupil, and she later taught at college, high school and elementary school levels as well as privately in her home. Mrs. Kinser was concert mistress of the Fayetteville, N.C., symphony and in 1975 was teacher of the year representing Long Hill Elementary in North Carolina where she taught third grade, directed school musicals and plays and instructed group keyboard and choral ensembles. Of particular note was her singing group, The Freedom Singers, who performed state-wide in celebration of the Bicentennial of the country. Tula Kinser was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Athens, a member of the DAR and the Clan Hay Society. She was also especially fond of a group called the Noon Club, dedicated to fellowship and friendship. A memorial concert will be held April 29 at 2:00 at First Presbyterian Church to honor her exceptional life and love of music.
