OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:02 a.m. on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 Jeanne Hurley Simon Lobbyist MAKANDA, Ill. -- Jeanne Hurley Simon, the wife of former Sen. Paul Simon who carved out her own career in the public eye, died Sunday from brain cancer. She was 77. Although best known as the wife of a respected former senator and presidential candidate, Simon had her own career, lobbying on behalf of educational and library issues. Before getting married, she served as an assistant Cook County state's attorney and a state representative from the area around Wilmette. Simon was one of the state's only female representatives in 1956 when she met her future husband, a fellow lawmaker, at the state capitol. She left the state House in 1960 after two terms to marry him. They worked together through several campaigns, including the senator's unsuccessful presidential campaign in 1988. After leaving government, she went on to become an advocate for educational issues and was named chairwoman of the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science in 1993. When her husband retired from the Senate in 1997, she accepted an adjunct professorship at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. But she said her primary role was in helping her husband carry out his agenda at the university's Public Policy Institute, which she helped found. She also wrote a book, ''Codename: Scarlett,'' detailing her experiences on the campaign trail during her husband's presidential bid. Anatoly Sobchak ST. PETERSBURG (AP) -- Anatoly Sobchak, a prominent reformer who as mayor transformed Soviet-era Leningrad into democratic St. Petersburg, died of a heart attack Sunday. He was 62. Sobchak also served as a mentor to acting President Vladimir Putin. Sobchak was an outspoken leader of Mikhail Gorbachev's campaign to reform the Soviet Union in the late 1980s, and was elected by a landslide as mayor of Russia's second-largest city a few months before the Soviet collapse in 1991. Sobchak's democratic credentials were stained by an investigation into allegations of bribery and abuse of power. During his tenure as mayor, the city that symbolizes Russia's pre-revolutionary splendor and rich literary history became known as one of the country's most crime-ridden and corrupt. He lost the mayor's office in 1996, and fled to France in November 1997 after suffering a heart attack while undergoing police questioning. Sobchak returned to Russia last summer, and the investigation was later dropped -- after his protege, Putin, was named prime minister. Goran Tunstrom STOCKHOLM, Sweden (AP) -- Popular Swedish writer Goran Tunstrom died Feb. 5 from sudden heart failure during a dinner with friends. He was 62. The award-winning author of several poetry collections, novels, dramas and travel stories. Tunstrom published his first poetry collection in 1958, but his work did not gain wide public acclaim until 1983 with his epic novel ''Christmas Oratorio,'' which was later made into a film. The story spans three generations, starting in the 1930s in his home county Sunne in northern Sweden and ending in New Zealand. ''There is no writing without pain,'' said Tunstrom, who in recent years was plagued by a heart attack, stroke, lung cancer and three car accidents. Martin Weissman PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Martin Weissman, better known as ''Trader Jon,'' was never in the Navy, but he was renowned among naval aviators for serving up cheer, loyalty and friendship at his ramshackle saloon, died Friday. He was 84. The proprietor of Trader Jon's for nearly half a century had a stroke in 1997 that left him partly paralyzed and with impaired speech. Trader Jon's was a fixture for aviators from Pensacola Naval Air Station, the Navy's training headquarters. Weissman was an honorary flight leader of the Blue Angels precision flying team, based at Pensacola, and they would sometimes give him rides in their jets. The New York City native opened Trader Jon's in 1953 in an old brick building, once a ship chandlery, on Pensacola's waterfront after serving in the Army and tending bar in Miami and Key West.
