Hammond Durham, N.C. Alice Sims Hammond, 95, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000. A native of Columbus, GA, she was born July 20, 1904 to Edwin Huson and Annie Louise Bessellieu Sims. Mrs. Hammond lived in Athens from 1945-1980. She moved to Summerville, SC in 1980 and had been a Durham resident since 1988. Mrs. Hammond was a longtime member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens. Surviving are her son and his wife, Dr. Charles B. and Peggy Hammond of Durham, NC; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Pattie Hammond of Summerville, SC. Mrs. Hammond was predeceased by her husband, Colonel Claude Greene Hammond, and her son, Claude Green Hammond, Jr. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday in Oconee Hill Cemetery, Athens, with the Rev. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:03 a.m. on Wednesday, February 23, 2000 Charles Edwin Aguar Athens Charles Edwin Aguar, 73, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000. A native of Jacksonville, Ill., Mr. Aguar was a son of the late Frank and Rose Ornellas Aguar. He was professor emeritus of landscape architecture with the University of Georgia School of Environmental Design and was a member of Athens First Presbyterian Church. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Athens First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Joe Berry officiating. Survivors include his wife, Berdeana Aguar; a daughter, Cathy Payne, Lawrenceville; four sons, Rick Aguar, Asheville, N.C., Dan Aguar, Kenny Aguar and David Aguar, all of Athens; and six grandchildren. Mr. Jackson was a son of Randy and Pat Jackson, Clarksville, and the late Linda Wood Jackson. He was a graduate of Winder Barrow High School and was employed by Tallulah River Resort. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Frank Colliday and Leon Pass officiating. Burial will be in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Survivors, in addition to his parents, include his grandparents, Glenn and Edna Jackson, and Oppie McKenzie, all of Statham; two sisters, Dana Picciotti and Shea Jackson, both of Clarksville; and two nephews. A native of Anderson County, S.C., Mrs. Borders was a daughter of the late Charlie and Janie Thomas Smith and was the widow of William H. Borders. She was raised in the home of Will Thomas and Georgia Thomas Almond. She was a member of Stinchcomb Methodist Church, Dewy Rose, and was a homemaker. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Berry Funeral Home with the Rev. Paul Rowe officiating. Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Ann Warren and Fannie Jane Dutton, both of Elberton; two sons, William Thomas Borders, Iva, and Charles B. Duncan Augusta James Lacey Duncan, 78, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000. A native of Elbert County, Mr. Duncan was a son of the late Lacey Jones and Georgia Dickerson Duncan. He was a heavy equipment operator and was of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Bowman, with the Rev. Dalton Carrington officiating. Survivors include five sisters, Ann D. Jones and Milner D. Hartzog, both of Barnwell, S.C., Mamie Jo Peeples, Atlanta, Willie Jean Winn, Royston, and Virginia D. Michaels, Bowman; three brothers, Charles C. Duncan, Dublin, Robert A. Duncan, Palm Harbor, Fla., and Samuel A. Duncan, Waynesboro, Tenn.; nieces and nephews.
