Sarah E. Northcutt, 82, died Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2000. A native of Palatka, Fla., Mrs. Northcutt was a former resident of Toccoa and graduated from Grady Memorial School of Nursing and Brenau College, Gainesville. She was a retired registered nurse and was a 32-year volunteer with the Red Cross. She was a member of the Ladies of the Nobles, North Brevard Shrine Club; the Order of the Eastern Star; and was of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at North Brevard Funeral Home, Titusville, Fla. Survivors include her husband, Samuel Awtry Northcutt; a daughter, Annette Northcutt Fellse, Kennewick, Wash.; three sons, Thomas A. Northcutt, James Rod Northcutt and William R. Northcutt, all of Titusville; four half-sisters, Edith Weaver, Josephine Dems, Virginia Horton and Lois Beck, all of Palatka, Fla.; a half-brother, William Squires, Barden, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A native of Essex County, N.J., Ms. Stiffler was a daughter of the late William Jerome and Rose Mary Reynolds Stiffler. She was a graduate of Belleville High School, N.J., and was a retired secretary for Shifman Mattress Company. She had lived in Greene County for two-and-a-half years and was a member of Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Our King and Savior Catholic Church, Greensboro, with Father Bill Williams officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington, N.J. Survivors include a brother, George Stiffler, Greensboro; two nieces, Therese Barnes, Atlanta, and Valerie Suessmith, Conyers; two nephews, George W. Stiffler, Arlington, Va., and Timmothy J. He had lived in Buena Vista since 1952 and was retired from a paving company. He was a veteran and a member of Buena Vista First Baptist Church. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Callaway had lived most of his life in Clarke and Oconee counties. He was the son of the late Cleve and Sindie Helton Callaway and the husband of the late Lois Brewer Callaway. He was a retired welder and a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Jeff Groover, Watkinsville, and Michelle and David Williamson, Hull; two sisters, Dora Mae Beck, Hull, and Sybil Irene Massey, Toccoa; and four grandchildren, Donna Rene Bullock, Hilton Head, S.C., Jeffery Tuck Groover II, Watkinsville, and Brittney Callaway and Whittney Callaway, both of Hull. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:29 p.m. on Sunday, October 22, 2000 Suzanne Hattaway Shockley Apalachee Suzanne Hattaway Shockley, 91, of Apalachee, died Sunday morning following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late B.A. Shockley of Apalachee, and the mother of four children, grandmother of 11, and great-grandmother of three. Additionally, there are five surviving stepchildren and 20 stepgrandchildren. She was born and raised in High Shoals. Mrs. Shockley taught music throughout her life following graduation from Brenau College with highest honors in the class of 1932. She edited the student newspaper and yearbook while at Brenau. She taught in grade school for many years and gave music lessons as recently as this month. Her career as a music teacher extended for some 70 years with pupils in Oconee, Morgan and Walton counties. A woman of great love, generosity and compassion for her fellow man, she generally found time in an amazingly busy day to do kind deeds for those in special need. Her weekly postcards to those she felt needed caring attention were directed to numerous people, especially the lonely elderly. Her love for animals, especially dogs and horses, was known by many. A stray dog showing up at her home in Apalachee received its own food dish twice daily and was given necessary immunization, baths and constant love. There were five such dogs on hand at the time of her death. An avid gardener, Mrs. Shockley enjoyed trying newly developed plants and shrubs and delighted in those with ancient backgrounds. She enjoyed antique furniture and rugs and acquired a significant body of knowledge of both. Surviving children are Mrs. David T. Smith of St. Simon's Island, Mr. John Hattaway Shockley of Apalachee, Mr. Peter Saffold Shockley of Alexandria, Virginia, and Mr. Joseph Truman Shockley of Marietta. Stepchildren surviving are Mrs. Robert I. Kemp of Marietta, Mr. Hugh H. Shockley of Buford, Mr. Leonard H. Shockley of Atlanta, Mrs. Victor B. Riden of Athens and Mr. Walter Ray Shockley of Winterville. Pallbearers will be her sons and stepsons. The family requests memorials to Mrs. Shockley may be sent to the Apalachee United Methodist Church. Funeral will be at Apalachee United Methodist Church Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at 11 a.m.; Family will receive friends Monday night from 5-8 p.m. at Simmons Funeral Home. Interment will be in Madison City Cemetery. Minister will be Dr. Ann Fletcher. Simmons Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
