Sohn Jr., a 1940 University of Georgia graduate who was the only person to serve three terms as chairman of the UGA Alumni Annual Fund, died Wednesday at age 81. Sohn, a retired businessman, was president of the UGA Alumni Society from 1989-91. He had served as a trustee and treasurer of the University of Georgia Foundation, and had been a trustee of the Georgia Student Educational Fund. Sohn died at his home in Marietta early Wednesday following a lengthy illness. During his three terms at the helm of the Alumni Annual Fund, Sohn helped raise more than $2.7 million. He served on the Alumni Seminar Committee and was a state-at-large member of the Alumni Society's Board of Managers before serving as society president. He was a member of UGA's Presidents Club and received the Alumni Society's 1981 Alumni Merit Award. As an undergraduate, Sohn was president of Phi Kappa literary society and Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity. He later attended Columbia University law school before entering military service and serving in World War II as a major in the infantry. After the war, he returned to Marietta where he was vice president of S. Schapiro & Sons Inc., an international textile fiber and fabric firm. ''Louis Sohn was one of the University of Georgia's most devoted and enthusiastic alumni,'' UGA President Michael Adams said in a statement. ''His keen intellect, bright personality and personal charm inspired and uplifted all who knew him. The depth of his love and dedication to his alma mater was unsurpassed, and his leadership, wisdom and counsel will be sorely missed.'' OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:12 a.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2000 Martha Beatrice Phillips Perry Athens Martha Beatrice Phillips Perry, age 84, died Wednesday, February 23, 2000 after a brief illness. Mrs. Perry was a life long resident of Athens, Ga. She was a 1933 graduate of Athens High School and a member of the Young Harris Memorial Methodist Church. She was the widow of the late Mr. Elton L. Perry. Survivors include a daughter, Jody (Alice Jo) Wachstein and her husband Stan Wachstein of Marietta and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be Friday, February 25, 2000 at 12:30 pm at Oconee Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Marsengill officiating. Sohn Jr. Marietta Louis S. Sohn Jr., formerly of Athens, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Mr. Sohn was a son of the late Louis S. Sr. and Celeste Hirschberg Sohn. He was a graduate of Boy's High School, Atlanta and the University of Georgia. He attended Columbia University School of Law. He was a veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of lieutenant colonel and serving in the European Theatre. He was active in UGA matters and was retired as senior vice president of S. Schapiro and Sons, Inc. He was past president of Textile Fibers Association, Atlanta Textile Waste Club, Marietta Rotary Club and Marietta Country Club. He was vice chairman of the Cobb County Library System and was chairman of the Marietta Housing Authority. He was past treasurer of Cobb County Emergency Aid and was a Cobb County Jury Commissioner. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at St. James Episcopal Church with the Revs. Karen Evans and David Perkins officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
