A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Burgess was a son of the late Johnny and Frances Sims Burgess. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul L. Burgess. He was a member of Oconee Baptist Church, Stephens. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Arnold Grove Baptist Church, Arnoldsville, with the Revs. Hoyt and James Allen Jr. officiating. A native of Stephens County, Mrs. Fowler was a daughter of the late John W. and Pearl Elizabeth Scott Collins and was the widow of Marshall F. DeFoor and Dr. Tom Fowler. She was a registered dental nurse and worked with her husband, Dr. Fowler, in dentistry. She was a member of Toccoa First Baptist Church and treasurer of Willing Workers Sunday School Class. She was a former member of Lavonia Woman's Club. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Toccoa First Baptist Church with the Rev. Art Conway officiating. Burial will be in Stephens Memorial Mausoleum. She received a bachelor's degree from Brenau College, was a teacher in the Toccoa school system and was a retired social worker. He had been recognized with the Prudential Spirit of the Community Award, and was an avid cyclist. He was the grandson of the late Thomas L. Adams, Dorothy C. Adams, and Howard Hancock. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:12 a.m. on Thursday, May 25, 2000 Col. (Ret) Dee William Pettigrew, Jr. Watkinsville Col. (Ret) Dee William Pettigrew, Jr., 79, of Watkinsville, GA died Tuesday, May 23, 2000. Dee was born February 28, 1921, in Poplar Grove, Arkansas, to Dee and Frankie Pettigrew. As a youth he was born again into eternal life by a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. He spent his early years helping on the family farm and with the family furniture business. Graduating from high school early, he attended Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas. With World War II looming in the immediate future, Dee secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York. He graduated on D-Day, June 6, 1944, was commissioned in the Field Artillery and was soon in the European Theatre with the 71st Infantry Division. Dee's division went the furthest east of any of the Allied Forces. Dee became a part of the occupying forces of Germany, and there met, fell in love with, and married Jacqueline Swindler, the daughter of the camp commander. Dee later obtained a double master's degree in aerodynamics and jet propulsion from the University of Southern California. He and his family enjoyed several overseas assignments, including Vietnam and Spain. After 30 years of active duty, Dee retired as a colonel and the deputy commander of Fort Bliss, Texas. After retirement, Dee earned a degree in biblical history and began teaching a long and well-received series of Sunday school classes. He was a member of the Gideons and Prince Avenue Baptist Church, and served on the board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He loved studying, teaching, doing household projects, and being with other people. Faith and family were Dee's paramount interests in life. His family shares that faith, and looks forward to being with him in the life to come. Funeral services will be held 7 PM Thursday in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, West, Bogart, GA. Revs. Bill Ricketts and Howard Greer will officiate. Graveside services will be held 11 AM Saturday at Shady Grove Cemetery, Clarendon, Arkansas. Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline, daughter Jennie Pettigrew, son Dee W. Pettigrew, III, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of Oconee County; also a sister and two brothers, all of Clarendon, Arkansas. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6-7 at the funeral home.
