A native of Portsmith, Va., Mrs. DeVere was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She attended St. Mary's College, Raleigh, N.C., and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She received her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va. She received her doctorate from Emory University and worked on the Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States. She taught at Augusta College, the University of Georgia, Tidewater Community College and Commonwealth College. She was creator and editor of Old Times Magazine. She was director of Elbert County Adult Literary Program for several years. She taught in the Navy's PACE program, recently in Rome, Italy, and was a member of St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. Memorial services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Hartford, N.C. Mrs. Shirley was born in Hart County Ga., January 5, 1895, but lived most of her life in Franklin County. She was the Daughter of the late Will Richardson and Louisa Emily Scott Richardson. Her husband was the late Arthur Shirley. Mrs. Shirley was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and a longtime member of the Liberty Home Demonstration Club. She taught Sunday School for 80 years and Vacation Bible School for 43 years. Survivors include: Daughter and Son-in-law, Jimmie and Andrew Kelley, Carnesville, Ga.; Granddaughters and Grandsons-in-law, Claire and Larry Hiscox, Hampton, Ga., Gayle and Charles Carr, Grayson, Ga.; Stepgranddaughter and Stepgrandson-in-law, Jean and Rev.
