Rider, 69, of Route 3, Long Circle, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2000. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Rider was a son of the late Clarence O. and Martha Spencer Rider. He was retired from the Toccoa water department and was employed with Singer Manufacturing Company. He served in the Korean conflict and was a member of the Old Toccoa Baptist Church. Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Old Toccoa Baptist Church with the Revs. Roger Elrod and Ernest Ivester officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Jewell Deal Rider; a daughter, Diane Ivester, Toccoa; two sons, Ron Rider and Alan Rider, both of Toccoa; three sisters, Jessie Long, Sara Verner Howard and Victorine Long, all of Toccoa; two brothers, Joe Rider and Early Rider, both of Toccoa; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Mr. Ashe was a native of Oglethorpe County, Georgia, and a longtime resident of Bishop. He was retired from Anaconda Wire and Cable Company, was a member of the Bishop Baptist Church where he served on the Board of Deacons, and was a well known as a water dowser. He was a the son of the late Carl Ash and Amanda Gilleland Ash, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Debra Anne Ashe, and a son, Donald Steven Ashe. Survivors include his wife, Sara Casper Ashe of Bishop; a son and daughter-in-law, Terrell and Joy Ashe of Bishop; a brother, Rev. James Ashe of Bishop; three sisters, Gladys Pearsall of Gadsden, Ala., Lillian Jackson of Blairsville, Ga., and Jessie Meyer of Arnoldsville, Ga.; a grandson, Christian Cody Ashe of Bishop; three step-grandchildren, Valerie Shealy, Victoria Shealy and Joey Shealy, all of Bishop; a stepsister, Jean Willbanks of Baldwin; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bowen was born in Franklin County, January 17, 1917, a daughter of the late Sam Bowers and Bessie Haley Bowers. She attended Wesleyan College and was a graduate of the University of Georgia. She was a guidance counselor at the high school and junior high level. Mrs. Bowen also worked with the Governor's Honors program. Her husband was the late James Young Bowen. Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Virginia Bowen and Alan O. Maier, Lafayette, La., Laura Elizabeth Bowen and Ralph C. Waters, Frostproof, Fla., and Marjorie Bowen and F. Mrs. Johnson was born May 19, 1897, on a plantation in Lowndes County, Ala., and was a daughter of the late William Berry and Mary Kate Campbell Young, and was the widow of James Cookson Johnson. She moved to Athens with her family in the mid 1930's and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and Women's Circle. She was an avid gardener and a former life member and past president of the Bobbin Mill Garden Club. She was also a former member of the Athens Historic Society and Athens Heritage Home Auxiliary. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the Bernstein Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joe Berry officiating. She moved to N.C. in 1991. She was the daughter of Stella and Eugene Hardman of Danielsville, Ga., and the widow of Charles O. Butts of Arnoldsville. In her productive years she was a school teacher, secretary and social worker for Family and Children Services, Oglethorpe and Clarke Counties.
