Casey Politician PITTSBURGH -- Robert J. Casey, a one-time Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives who pushed for better transportation in the Pittsburgh area, died Wednesday of cancer. He was 77. Besides running for Congress in 1976, he founded the conservative Free Congress Foundation in Washington and the High Speed Rail/Magnetic Levitation Association based in Pittsburgh and Washington. President Reagan appointed Casey to the executive committee of the Small Business Administration's National Advisory Council. OBITUARIES John Coatta Football player Madison, Wis. -- John Coatta, who quarterbacked the University of Wisconsin to success from 1949-51 and coached the football team from 1967-69, died Tuesday in Minnetonka, Minn., from bone cancer. He was 71. A native of Dearborn, Mich., Coatta came to Wisconsin in 1948 as a running back, but was moved to quarterback. Coatta ranks 14th in program history with 2,140 career passing yards and eighth in team history with a 51.9 completion percentage. In three seasons, he completed 178 of 343 attempts, with nine touchdowns. Coatta returned to Wisconsin in 1965, accepting an assistant coaching position under Milt Bruhn. The Badgers were 10-17-1 in their previous three seasons. Coatta was promoted to head coach in 1966. Coatta went on to coach at NCAA Division II Mankato (Minn.) State, served as an assistant at Minnesota, scouted for the NFL's Seattle Seahawks and Dallas Cowboys and most recently was an assistant high school coach in Minnesota under his son John Coatta Jr. He was inducted into the Madison Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. -- Associated Press Šopyright 2000 Athens Newspapers Inc. A native of Banks County, Mr. Cash was a son of the late Elijah and Nelar Purcell Cash. He served on the Democratic Committee for 16 years and was a Justice of the Peace for 16 years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a member of Damascus Baptist Church and was a retired poultry farmer. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, with the Revs. Roy Rogers, Warren Wilkinson and Loyd Martin officiating. Survivors include his wife, Emily Stowe Cash; three daughters, Ann Cash Rooks, Flovilla, June Cash Collins, Cleveland, and Bonnie Cash Meeler, Maysville; a son, Nelson Loyd Cash Jr., Commerce; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
