A native of Athens, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late Warner Rowe and Sarah Lou Cooper and was the widow of Aubrey E. Martin. She was a graduate of the University of Georgia and was a member of the Eastern Star. She taught school for 42 years in Georgia and North Carolina at Gibson, Mary MacArthur and Douglas Byrd junior high schools. She was a charter member of Village Drive Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer of her Sunday school class and was the flower lady. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:47 p.m. on Tuesday, November 28, 2000 Louise DeVere Rome, Italy Louise Albertson DeVere, 56, of Athens, Ga. died Sunday, November 19, while touring St. Paul's Cathedral in the Vatican. At the time of her death, she was teaching for the Navy's PACE program aboard the U.S.S. George Washington, which was in port in Naples. Born in Portsmouth, Va., she was graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. Louise studied at St. Mary's Junior College, Raleigh, and at U.N.C.-Chapel Hill before completing her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English at Old Dominion University. While taking graduate courses toward her doctorate at Emory University, she worked on the Linguistic Atlas of the United States. Her teaching career began at Augusta College and continued at the University of Georgia at Athens until she returned to Portsmouth to teach at Tidewater Community College and at Commonwealth College. She was cofounder and editor of Olde Times Magazine in Portsmouth for several years. She served on the boards of The Descendants of Peter Francisco and of The Order of Cape Henry, 1607, and she was a founding member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the O.D.U. Alumni Association. Louise had returned to Georgia in 1997, where she worked for a year as Director of the Elbert County Adult Literacy Program. For the past several years, she lived in Athens but spent more of her time abroad, teaching PACE English courses for Central Texas College. Perhaps her life might be best characterized by Chaucer's words: ''Gladly would she learn, and gladly teach.'' She is survived by two daughters, Susan Brooker DeVere of Athens, Ga. and Yvonne Louise DeVere of Lexington, Ga., and by her brother Robert Brooke Albertson of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by both parents, Robert Brooke and Louise Gaither Albertson. Memorial service will be Friday, December 1, 2000, at 3:30 PM at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. Dudley Bowman PFC James Wilburn Dudley, 76, of 1952 Graham Road, Bowman, Ga. died Monday, November 27, 2000 at Cobb Memorial Hospital in Royston, Ga. Mr. Dudley was born in Madison County, Ga., January 3, 1924, son of the late William Alfred Dudley and Linnie Fleeman Dudley. He was a textile worker and farmer. A PFC U.S. Army Veteran during World War II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, and was a member of the 32nd Infantry Division. Mr. Dudley was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where he was a lifetime Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and R.A. Director. His wife was the late Evelyn Dickerson Dudley.
