Hazel Dean Shields Mathers, 87, of 2508 McHenry Drive, died Friday, Oct. 27, 2000. A native of Jackson County, Mrs. Mathers was a daughter of the late Emory H. and Annie Elder Shields, and was the widow of Jesse Alexander Mathers. She was a homemaker. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Revs. Mike Pethel and Tom Carter officiating. Burial will be in Galilee Christian Church cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Anne Mathers Orange, Maryland; a sister, Nancy Shields, Winder; a brother, George Shields; two grandchildren; and two nieces. A native of Swainsboro, Mr. Canady was a son of the late Otis and Fannie May Little Canady, and was the widower of Betty Jean Canady. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was of the Baptist faith. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles White officiating. Burial will be in Toccoa City Cemetery. Survivors include four daughters, Marchelle Hill and Betty Hansen, both of Hinesville, Damita Swainigen, O'Fallon, Ill., and Barbara Shumake, Virginia Beach, Va.; three sons, Charles Canady, Swainsboro, Otis Canady, Eastanollee, and George Canady, Hinesville; two sisters, Bernice Canady, Camden, N.J., and Anna Marie Garrett, Detroit; and 15 grandchildren.
