He was a retired U.S. Army officer and a veteran of the Korean War, and had retired as a correctional officer. He was preceded in death by his wife Katherine Ingram Jones. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 2:01 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2000 Paul Brannon Dorsey Athens Photo: obits [INLINE] Paul Brannon Dorsey Sr. [INLINE] Paul Brannon Dorsey Sr., 85, of 1600 Campbell Road, died Saturday, May 27, 2000. A native of White County, Mr. Dorsey was the son of George Lester and Nora Sosebee Dorsey. He and his wife Viola moved to Athens in 1946. He was a retired Athens businessman, having owned and operated Dorsey Heating and Air Conditioning company for more than 30 years. Mr. Dorsey had numerous civic and community activities of which he was a part. In 1993 he received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Athens Junior League. He was a longtime volunteer with Athens Habitat for Humanity and served as Site Selection Committee Chairperson, obtaining major donations within that organization. He was involved in the construction of 25 Habitat homes from 1989 to 1999. He directed the construction of the Athens Area Homeless Shelter located on Barber Street and also served on the board of directors and as a substantial fund-raiser for that organization. For 10 years he served on the board of the Athens Boys Club, also serving as Cub Master for Cub Scout Pack 76, PTA President of Barnett Shoals Elementary School, 1975 President of the Clarke County Cattleman's Association and fund- raiser for the local Community Chest. He was the Chairman of Hope Haven School for 15 years. He served two years on the Democratic Executive Board and served as Chairman of the Democratic Party for Clarke County in the mid 1960s. During the 1960s and 1970s, Mr. Dorsey was heavily involved with the Civitan organization, where he served as president of Gaines Civitan Club and Lt. Governor and Governor of Georgia District North. In 1977 he was awarded the Civitan's Lee Rogers Humanitarian Award. Funeral services will be at noon Wednesday, May 31 at Green Acres Baptist Church. Private burial will be in the Oconee Hills Cemetery, Athens. Survivors include his wife, Viola Faulkner Dorsey; three daughters, Lynn D. Gatchell and her husband Doug Gatchell, Athens, Mary D. Anderson and her husband Michael Anderson, Montgomery, Ala., and Beth Dorsey and Burwell Robinson, Richmond, Va.; two sons, Paul B. Dorsey, Jr., Athens, and David F. A native of Clarke County, Mr. Goodrum was the son of the late James Henry and Alice May Goodrum. His former wives Clara Smelley Goodrum and Gennell Bridges Goodrum preceded him in death. He was a retired carpenter from Mathis Construction Company, a veteran of World War II serving in the U.s. Army and a member of the Oconee Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include nieces Betty Garrett, Statham, Helen Hendrix, Athens and Ruth Griffin, Bogart. Several great nieces and nephews also survive.
