OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 James Alford Stapleton Sr. Cornelia James Alford Stapleton Sr. age 84, of Cornelia, GA died Tuesday, November 28, 2000 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a short illness. Mr. Stapleton was born in Athens, GA on July 11, 1916 and was a son of the late Luther Lynwood and Addie Alford Stapleton. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Laura Lorene Stribling Stapleton, whom he married in 1939. Mr. Stapleton graduated from Georgia Tech with a BS degree in Textile Engineering in 1939. He received the Textile Department's highest honors. He was a member of Phi Psi National Honorary Textile Fraternity and was a member of Scabbard and Blade Honor Society. He was a member of the Navy ROTC and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy. He was employed with J & P Coats as Chemical Engineer in the Georgia processing plant in Toccoa, GA. He was later employed with Chicopee Corporation in Chicopee, Massachusetts, Newnan, GA, Gainesville, GA and Cornelia, GA. He founded Habersham Metal Products Co. in Cornelia, GA in 1954. He later established a sales office in Atlanta, GA. He retired as Chairman of the Board and CEO in 1996. He was one of the founders and past Chairman of the Southern Hollow Metal Association and helped lead the SHMA to become affiliated with the National Association of Architectural Metal Manufacturers, forming a new division, the Hollow Metal Manufacturers Associations. He was one of the authors of the first HMMA Technical Design manual. Mr. Stapleton served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was an instructor at the Naval Academy Prep School, then served as Destroyer Escort Commander in the South Pacific. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander in 1947. He was a member of the Destroyer Escort Commanders Organization. He was an active member of the Cornelia First Baptist Church since 1949. He served several terms as chairman of the deacon board, chairman of the building committee that constructed the present First Baptist sanctuary and Sunday school building that was completed in March 1969 and chairman of the Budget & Finance Committees. Mr. Stapleton served in several volunteer positions with the Boy Scouts of America since 1956. He served as assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 46, Chicopee; helped organize Cub Scout Pack # 24 and Troop 24 in Cornelia; and served as district chairman for Piedmont District. He also served on the Northeast Georgia Council executive board and was very supportive of the annual sustaining membership enrollment fund drive. In 1969, he received the highest honor bestowed on a Boy Scout volunteer, the distinguished Silver Bear Award. Survivors include: his wife, Beulah Pitts Cunningham Stapleton of Cornelia, whom he married in 1988. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:07 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2000 Louise DeVere Rome, Italy Louise Albertson DeVere, 56, of Athens, Ga. died Sunday, November 19, while touring St. Paul's Cathedral in the Vatican. At the time of her death, she was teaching for the Navy's PACE program aboard the U.S.S. George Washington, which was in port in Naples. Born in Portsmouth, Va., she was graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School. Louise studied at St. Mary's Junior College, Raleigh, and at U.N.C.-Chapel Hill before completing her B.A. and M.A. degrees in English at Old Dominion University. While taking graduate courses toward her doctorate at Emory University, she worked on the Linguistic Atlas of the Gulf States. Her teaching career began at Augusta College and continued at the University of Georgia at Athens until she returned to Portsmouth to teach at Tidewater Community College and at Commonwealth College. She was cofounder and editor of Olde Times Magazine in Portsmouth for several years. She served on the boards of The Descendants of Peter Francisco and of The Order of Cape Henry, 1607, and she was a founding member of the Portsmouth Chapter of the O.D.U. Alumni Association. Louise had returned to Georgia in 1997, where she worked for a year as Director of the Elbert County Adult Literacy Program. For the past several years, she lived in Athens but spent more of her time abroad, teaching PACE English courses for Central Texas College. Perhaps her life might be best characterized by Chaucer's words: ''Gladly would she learn, and gladly teach.'' She is survived by two daughters, Susan Brooke DeVere of Athens, Ga. and Yvonne Louise DeVere of Lexington, Ga., and by her brother Robert Brooke Albertson of Portsmouth. She was preceded in death by both parents, Robert Brooke and Louise Gaither Albertson. Memorial service will be Friday, December 1, 2000, at 3:30 PM at St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. A native of White County, Cleveland, GA, she was a daughter of the late William and Lillian Wofford Henderson and the widow of James O. Lunsford. She was a graduate of Cleveland High School and Teachers College of the University of Georgia. Following graduation, she taught school in Cleveland. Mrs. Lunsford was a longtime resident of Detroit, MI where she was active in numerous civic, community and church organizations. Among her civic activities were President of Palestine Woman's Association, Secretary of Detroit New Century Club, various offices of Federation of Women's Clubs of Metropolitan Detroit, member of Salvation Army Auxiliary, Women's Association of Goodwill Industries, Project Hope and Women's Association of Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She was a member of Ahmose Chapter, Daughters of The Nile for 30 years and former member of Palestine Chapter and Strathmoor Chapter of O E S. Her community involvement included memberships and Board offices of Michigan Society for Mental Health, Mayors Committee Keep Detroit Beautiful, Committee on ''Rearing of Children of Good Will,'' Round Table of Detroit and volunteer for United Community Services. Mrs. Lunsford was a past member of Covenant Baptist Church and Woodward Avenue Baptist Church where she was past president of Board of Christian Education, Sunday School Teacher, Head of the Junior Department and other various committees. Upon moving to Athens, GA in 1984, she became active in Green Acres Baptist Church. Graveside services will be Friday, December 1, 2000 at 2:00 PM from the graveside in Old Cleveland Cemetery, Cleveland, GA. Survivors include nephews and spouses, Bill and Joyce Bowen of Athens, GA and Jerry and Mildred Hackney of Washington, GA.
