A native of Stephens County, Mr. Holbrooks was a son of the Lettie Mae Jones Holbrooks and the late John Holbrooks. He was employed with Robertson Furniture Company. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles White officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Burial will be in Toccoa City Cemetery. Survivors in addition to his mother include a daughter, Lashaun W. Sugg, Toccoa; a son, Nathan Wiley, Atlanta; two sisters, Christine Holbrooks and Sula Holbrooks, both of Toccoa; a brother, James Holbrooks, Tacoma Park, Md.; and four grandchildren. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 1:22 p.m. on Monday, January 31, 2000 Billy Browning Adel Mr. Billy Browning, age 62, of Adel, Ga., passed away Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, at the Memorial Hospital of Adel. He was born June 27, 1937 in Cook County and lived there all his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was founder and CEO of Vulcan Steel. Mr. Browning pioneered the steel building industry in Cook County. In 1999 his company, Vulcan Steel Structures, was named the Business of the Year by the Cook County Chamber of Commerce. Indicative of his kind heart and generous deeds, he left a lasting legacy through his support of the arts, education, recreation and human resources in the community. Within the past year he recognized a critical need in Cook County and helped secure funds to establish a permanent homeless shelter. He was also instrumental in establishing the Cook County Transit System. Mr. Browning was preceded in death by his father Elton Browning. Survivors include his wife, Barbara Register Browning of Adel, Ga.; a daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Mark Sanders of Athens, Ga.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Lynn Browning of Valdosta, Ga., and Brian and Lisa Browning of Valdosta, Ga.; five grandchildren, Mark and Caroline Sanders, Benjamin Browning, and Brian and Harris Browning; his mother, Thelma Gandy Browning of Adel, Ga.; and a brother, Donald Browning of Adel, Ga. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Mike Ruffin and the Rev. Dillard Ensley officiating. Burial will be in Antioch Church cemetery.
