Allen, 66, of 297 Davis Street, died Friday, October 27, 2000. Mary Clay Allen was born in Florence, Alabama on May 19, 1934, the second youngest of seven children, to the late George and Pearl Clay. Mary was an active and devoted church member at First A.M.E. Church in Athens, GA. Mary was educated in the public schools of Chattanooga, TN. She attended and graduated from the former Athens High & Industrial School with the class of 1952. She matriculated at Morris Brown in Atlanta, Georgia where she earned an A.B. degree in English as well as earning a M.A. degree in English and Education from Atlanta University. She spent eighteen years as a teacher in the public schools of Athens, Georgia and touched the lives of so many in her special caring way. Mary was a dedicated teacher, always willing to assist her students and fellow teachers in any task they desired. She loved life, loved people, loved her family, and loved her church. Mary was involved in many organizations in the church and community of Athens. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the Majorettes Club, Athens Area Retired Teachers and many other social and service organizations. Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 1, 2000 at First A.M.E. Church with Rev. Dr. George LaSure officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:00 p.m. Entombment will be at Evergreen Memorial Park/ Survivors include, three sons, Walter R.
