OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:28 p.m. on Saturday, March 31, 2001 ''Blanche'' Chitwood Martin Mrs. Winnie (Blanche) Vandiver Chitwood, age 78, of 425 Clarks Creek Road, Martin, Ga. wife of Walter Boyd Chitwood died Saturday, March 31, 2001. Mrs. Chitwood was born May 26, 1922 in Franklin County, Ga. to the late William Enoch and Effie Thomas Vandiver. She retired from the Franklin County Board of Education with approximately thirty years of service in the Food Service Division. Mrs. Chitwood was with the Lavonia Elementary School until 1964 and then at the Franklin County High School until her retirement in 1988. She was a dedicated and faithful member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Martin, Ga. where she has served in many area of stewardship and very dedicated in community activities. Survivors, in addition to her husband, include: son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Karen Chitwood, Martin, Ga.; two grandsons, Brad Chitwood and Kyle Chitwood, Martin, Ga.; two sisters, Irene V. Humphrey, Lavonia, Ga. and Louise Allison, Lavonia, Ga.; many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Chitwood was preceded in death by two brothers, W.A. (Amos) Vandiver and Enoch Vandiver Jr.; and one sister, Lillian V. Loggins. A native of Suffern, New York, Mrs. Hendrick was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman J. Wood and the late Marion Murdock Wood. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2001 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 498 Prince Avenue, Athens, Georgia, with the Reverend Mandy Brady officiating. A private internment will take place at Oconee Hill Cemetery in Athens, Georgia. Mrs. Hendrick was a graduate of the University of Georgia with a Master's degree in the education of children with emotional disabilities. She held a certificate as a national instructor and demonstration teacher for the Developmental Therapy-Teaching Programs in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences at the University of Georgia. Her career was a reflection of her dedication to children with special needs. She had numerous publications in the field of educating young children with autism and served as field services coordinator for the University teacher training program. She also was coordinator of the Rutland Psychoeducational Infant/Preschool Program and a staff clinician in the University's Special Education Clinic in Aderhold Hall, specializing in services for young children with autism and their families. In 1982 she helped establish the Emmanuel Episcopal Day School, which provides spaces for young children with special needs, and served as the director during its formative years. She was recently honored with the establishment of a scholarship fund for Emmanuel Episcopal Day School in her name. Survivors include her parents; her husband, Michael Alan Hendrick; a daughter, Sarah Reynolds Hendrick; a son, Alan Hunter Hendrick; a sister, Elizabeth Wood Harbison; a brother, David Murdock Wood; two stepsisters, Cynthia Creagh Flanders and Margaret Andrews Hancock; a stepbrother, William Alexander Andrews; aunt, Lenore Murdock; uncle and aunt, Donald R. and Mary Lou Wood; and seven nieces and nephews.
