A native of Greene County, Mr. Johnson was a son of the late Fannie Mae and Jenkins Johnson. He was the owner of Johnson Logging Company. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Boswell Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. David Blockum officiating. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He was a graduate of Southern Tech, was a World War II navy veteran and was a retired sales representative for Johns-Manville. He was a member of the Quarter-Century Club of Johns-Manville, was a Boy Scout leader and a life member of the Boy Scouts. He attended Southside Baptist Church in Charlotte, N.C. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:27 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2001 Thomas Frazer Benton Commerce Mr. Thomas Frazer Benton, 80, of 203 Victoria Street, Commerce, Ga. died Saturday. Mr. Benton was a farmer and president of Commerce Milling Company for many years. In 1956 he became affiliated with Commerce Building and Loan and in 1972 became president and CEO. After a merger with Athens First Bank and Trust he served as Vice President, Branch Manager, and on the board of directors until his retirement in 1983. He was a graduate of Martin Institute and attended Emory at Oxford and received a bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Georgia. Mr. Benton was a World War II veteran where he served in the 517 Regimental Combat Team, European Theatre. He was a member of Commerce Kiwanis Club, B.J.C. Hospital Authority, Sons of Confederate Veterans and a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church Administrative Board. A former member of the Hudson Lodge 294 F&AM, the Tumbling Water Society, former Chairman of the Commerce Board of Education and was a 30-year member of the Jackson County Planning and Development Commission. He was the son of the late T.T. and Sallie Kate Frazer Benton. Preceded in death by a sister, Frances Benton Shi. Survivors include his wife, Matilda Housch Benton of Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Karen Benton of Jefferson, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen Benton and Jimmy T. Hooper of Maysville, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Matilda Benton and Robert Wangerien of Turlock, Calif.; daughter Elizabeth Benton of Commerce, Ga.; grandchildren Leigh Ann Benton Weaver of Dalton, Ga., Thomas H. He was a Madison County resident since 1918 and was retired from General Time. He attended Meadow Baptist Church where he was a deacon. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:27 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, 2001 Jeanne Mathis Athens Mrs. Jeanne Lyons Mathis died Friday, June 29, 2001, at her residence, 725 Milledge Circle, Athens. Mrs. Mathis was the widow of the late William A. Mathis and the daughter of the late Ernest S. Lyons and Harriet Ewers Lyons. She was born in Dagupan, Philippine Islands, where her parents were Methodist missionaries. Mrs. Mathis is survived by her daughters, Sylvia Mathis Gibson of Athens, and Myrna Mathis Rowland of Charleston, South Carolina; her grandchildren, William Mathis Rowland, and Price Rowland Wright, Charleston, South Carolina; and her great-granddaughters, Eleanor and Abigail Wright, also of Charleston. Mrs. Mathis graduated from the University of Georgia in 1934. While in college and throughout her life, she was active in theater groups, and was a founder of the Town and Gown Players of Athens. Because of her interest in the local theater group, her husband built and gave to the City of Athens, in her honor, Town and Gown Theater on the grounds of the Taylor-Grady House. She was a past president of the YMCA (YWCO) board and summer camp. Mrs. Mathis was a member of the First United Methodist Church, a longtime leader of a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop, President of Athens Junior League, President of Athens Garden Club, and an active supporter of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia and its development since its founding. Funeral services will be at 4 o'clock p.m. today at the First United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Bill Britt and the Reverend Grady T. Wigley officiating.
