He was corporate director for Empire Manufacturing Co. from 1970-1996 and was vice president of operations for Scraps International, Winder, from 1996-1999. He was named in Outstanding Young Men in America and received the Eagle Scout Award from the Boy Scouts of America. He served as local and state officer with the U.S. Jaycees. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:21 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2001 Dr. R. Waldo Powell Atlanta Dr. R. Waldo Powell, ''A Modern Medical Hero'' as quoted by ''The Emory University Hospital Report'' passed away on March 1, 2001. For 38 years, he was a world-renowned breast cancer surgeon at Emory University Hospital. Born in Doerun, Georgia on January 31, 1922, he was a graduate of Duke University Medical School. Following medical school, he served as a physician in the Navy for three years. After six years of surgical residency at Grady Memorial Hospital, he joined the Robert Winship Clinic of Emory University Hospital in 1954. Dr. Powell was a member of the Southern Surgical Association, the American College of Surgery, Fulton County Medical Society, American Medical Association, American Board of Surgery, Society of Surgical Oncology, Georgia Medical Association, and the Georgia Surgical Society. Dr. Powell collaborated in over 50 articles and book chapters. At Emory University School of Medicine, Dr. Powell served as an instructor in surgery from 1954 to 1956; was an associate in surgery from 1956 to 1959; was an assistant professor of surgery from 1959 to 1965; and, was an associate professor of surgery from 1965 to 1992. Dr. Powell was an avid gardener. One of his proudest gardening moments was winning the ''Largest Home Grown Tomato'' award at 23/4 pounds from Green Brothers Nursery. He also loved boating and fishing with his family at their home on Lake Hartwell. Dr. Powell was a well-respected physician, a loving father, and a devoted husband, above all, he was a humble man who touched many lives. He was and will always be deeply loved by family, friends and colleagues. He will be profoundly missed. Dr. Powell is survived by his beloved wife, Juanita, and four loving children, Ralph W. Powell, Jr. and wife, Heather, of Athens, Georgia; Carole Powell and husband, Dwight Duffus, of Atlanta; Susan Vlass and husband, Barry, of Roswell, Georgia; Kathy Robinson and husband, Mike of Greensboro, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Kelly, Drew, Sidney Vlass and Jamie Sharpless; and brother, Glower Jones and wife, Joanna. The family will receive friends from 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. Saturday at Spring Hill. Funeral services will be 4:00 o'clock Sunday March 4, 2001 at Peachtree Christian Church, Rev.
