A native of Derrick City, Pa., Mr. Montgomery was the widower of Gladys Anderson Montgomery. He attended Pennsylvania public schools and graduated from Ohio Northern University. He received his master of arts degree and his Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. The later degree was the first doctorate granted by UGA. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and taught in the UGA Department of History from 1947-1978. He was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Innsbruck, Innsbruck, Austria, in 1960. Mrs Owensby was a graduate of Young Harris College and the University of Georgia. She earned her Masters Degree in counseling from the University of Georgia in the 1960's and was the only counselor at Commerce High School until her retirement in 1985. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce, also a member of many civic groups. Mrs Owensby moved to Griffin in 1993. She attended First United Methodist Church of Griffin and was active in the Senior Citizens Organization, First Friends, and Pink Ladies at Spalding Regional Hospital. She was a native of Forsyth County Georgia. She was the daughter of the late Candler and Isabella Tumlin and the wife of the late Dr William A. Owensby.
