Elm St. died Monday, Feb. 5, 2001. A native of Hancock County, Mrs. Arnold was a daughter of the late Joseph Reed Johnson and Mary Elizabeth Roberts Johnson and was the widow of John Dewitt Arnold. She was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Strickland. She was a graduate of Sparta High School and was a retired nurse from Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital where she worked for 30 years. She was a midwife with the Red Cross during World War II and was a member of the Professional Women's Club. She was a member of Greensboro First United Methodist Church. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Mathews was a son of the late Edward Lee and Ethel Smith Mathews. He was a graduate of Eastanollee High School and of Athens Business College. He was a member of Toccoa First Baptist Church, where he was past chairman of the board of deacons, was honored as Man of the Year in 1995, and was chairman of the building committee. He was a 50-year Mason, served on the Salvation Army Board, the Stephens County Hospital Authority, the Welfare Board and was past president of the Toccoa Rotary Club. He was formerly employed by Judson Mills, Greenville, S.C. and by R.G. LeTourneau. He owned and operated a general merchandise business in Martin and Mathews Mortuary, now Whitlock Mortuary, until his retirement in 1969.
