OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:33 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2001 Alfred Becker Athens Alfred Werner Becker, 81, died on Thursday, July 5, 2001 at his home at 150 Curtis Drive. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Becker was a son of the late Emma and Alois Becker. He is survived by his wife, Eileen; and two sons and daughters-in-law, Karl Becker and Nancy Bird, of Cordova, Alaska, and David and Penny Becker, of New York, N.Y. Mr. Becker studied radio engineering at the University of Cincinnati, broadcasting journalism at the Ohio State University, and received his B.A. (Phi Beta Kappa) and Ph.D. in foreign languages from the University of Maryland, where he taught briefly as a professor. He also attended the Johns Hopkins University School for Advanced International Studies and Mexico City College. He served as an electronics technician in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and remained active in amateur radio broadcasting throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Foreign Service in Colombia, Bolivia, Guatemala, and Chile. He later taught as a professor at State University College of New York at Buffalo, serving as departmental chair and foreign student adviser, and Director of the College's Costa Rica and Siena, Italy exchange programs. He acted as a Consultant in University Management for the State University of New York Research Foundation at the National University in Asuncion, Paraguay, where he served on the Board of Directors of the American School and the Binational Center. He authored several publications related to Spanish literature and university reform. After retiring to Athens in 1986 with his wife, Eileen, he became active in Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic, Meals on Wheels, and Habitat for Humanity. He was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church and the Athens Radio Club. Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, July 9, 2001, at Covenant Presbyterian Church, Athens, with the Revs. Jim Bowden and Beecher Mathes officiating. After moving to Watkinsville in 1984, she became associated with the Oconee Public Library and was an active member of the Beech Haven Baptist Church where she was a member of the ladies Joy Class. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:33 p.m. on Friday, July 6, 2001 Anita Vickery Hartwell, Georgia Mrs. Shirley Anita Carroll Vickery, 72, of 1084 Elrod Ferry Road, Hartwell, Georgia died Thursday, July 5, 2001 at the Hart County Hospital, in Hartwell, Georgia. Mrs. Vickery was born in Franklin County, June 28, 1929 daughter of the late William Monroe Carroll and the late Susie Shirley Carroll. She attended the University of Georgia and received bachelor's and master's degrees from North Georgia College. She retired as Director of the Hart-Franklin Services Center. Mrs. Vickery was a pioneer in the development of services for individuals with mental retardation, beginning the Center in 1969 and serving as its director until her retirement in 1994. She was a powerful force in the efforts toward deinstitutionalization in Northeast Georgia, establishing two community group homes for citizens with retardation and multiple employment sites in Hart and Franklin Counties. She founded the Hart-Franklin Association for Retarded Citizens and was recognized by the Governor of Georgia for her willingness to take on experimental projects and her commitment to making them work. She was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Leonard Johnson Vickery, Hartwell; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry W. and Sharon S. Vickery, Kernersville, N.C., Rickey S. and Andrea B. Vickery, Richmond, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Shirley A. Vickery and Lex A. Rogerson, Lexington, S.C.; sisters, Jewel C.
