OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:35 p.m. on Monday, May 7, 2001 Jennifer L. Curtis Byler Cape Charles, Va. Jennifer Curtis Byler and her nine year old eldest daughter Sarah Alexandria Byler expired from hypothermia within six miles of their home in Chesapeake Bay. They, along with Jenny's brother and sister-in-law, remained in their swamped sail boat for thirteen hours before being retrieved by a military Search and Rescue helicopter on Sunday morning, 5 May. Mrs. Byler is survived by her husband Gary C. Byler, daughters Georgia Cate and Emma Grace and son Curtis all of Cape Charles, Virginia; her sister, Alice, and her husband, Ken Nowland of Atlanta, a brother, Alex, and his wife Nan Curtis of Watkinsville, nieces Amy and Laura and nephews Sam and Jack. Her parents are Jack and Patty Curtis of Athens. In addition, she is survived by a multitude of friends and associates garnered through the years from her ''people-oriented love,'' politics. A native of Athens, Ga., she graduated from Athens Academy, as well as, the University of Arizona. She became involved in Republican politics as a child and eventually ran many campaigns, as well as, fundraising events. This prompted her to start a direct mail solicitation company. The Marketing Dept., that has become extremely effective in creating fundraising for Republican Candidates. Her appointments by Virginia Governors to various state-side boards and commissions have been numerous and yet, this past year, she ran for and was elected to the coveted position of Republican National Committeewoman from Virginia. She was serving on the Republican National Committee at the time of her death. Jenny was an outspoken, articulate, competitive person that demanded much more of herself than of others. She was most capable of analyzing a problem, finding the solution, and then doggedly pursuing the correction until conquered. While firm, she was compassionate and obliging; along with her trade mark of a smile, twinkle and a laugh, she was able to unselfishly motivate the people she loved and befriended.
