Calvin Atlanta James Arthur ''Jim'' Calvin, 54, of One Spring Green Place, formerly of Toccoa, died Saturday, April 7, 2001. A native of Atlanta, Mr. Calvin was a son of the late Lloyd and Virginia Caudle Calvin. He was a graduate of Berry Academy and received his bachelor of science degree in urban economics and a masters in public administration from Georgia State University. He was a U.S. Army veteran and served in West Berlin, working at Spandau Prison. He served as assistant commissioner at the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and as executive director of the Toccoa-Stephens County Community Development Agency. He became city manager of Toccoa and served for 13 years. He was a member of the GMA board of directors, chairman of the GMA Municipal Government Committee and chairman of the Georgia Municipal Employee's Benefit System Board of Trustees. In 1996, he was named GMA Executive Director. He also served as secretary-treasurer of the Foundation. He was a member of the Georgia State University Alumni Board of Trustees, was vice president of the International City-County Management Association and was president of the Georgia City-County Management Association. He was a member of the 1993 Leadership Georgia class, was chairman of Leadership Toccoa-Stephens County and was a member of the Georgia Mountains Regional Development Center Board of Directors. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, Atlanta. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Grace Chapel of Toccoa Falls College with the Rev. Dr. Ted Wardlaw officiating. Burial will be in Toccoa City Cemetery with Toccoa VFW Post #4346 in charge of military graveside services. Survivors include his wife, Patsy Horton Calvin; two sons, Matt Calvin and Josh Calvin, both of Toccoa; a sister, Rebecca Robinson, Asheville, N.C.; a brother, Michael Calvin, Cape Girardeau, Mo.; nieces and nephews. Pallbearers will be Matt Calvin, Josh Calvin, John Dickerson, B.A. Algood III, Jimmy Robinson, Mitchell Wright, Jim Burgess and Mike Calvin. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the executive committee of GMA and Elmer George, Billy George, Greg Fender, Bill Thornton, Jim Higdon, Cal Wray and Moogie Childers. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:03 p.m. on Tuesday, April 10, 2001 Claude Johnson 'Mac' McCurdy Jr. Union City Claude Johnson ''Mac'' McCurdy, Jr., age 87, formerly of Chamblee and Danielsville, GA, died April 10, 2001 at Christian City Convalescent Center of complications from Alzheimer's Disease. He was born January 26, 1914 in Banks County, GA, the fourth of seven children, to Blonnie Chambers McCurdy and Claude J. McCurdy, Sr. Mac spent most of his working years in the paint manufacturing industry. He was an entrepreneur who founded Maxi-Kote Paint Company and Mercury Spray Equipment in Chamblee where he lived with his family for thirty years. He was a devoted member of the Lions Club and served in various positions on the board. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chamblee, and later Jones Chapel United Methodist Church in Danielsville. His parents; his first wife, Rosemary Speir McCurdy; his oldest son, C.J. McCurdy, III; one grandchild; one brother and one sister preceded Mr. McCurdy in death. He is survived by his wife, Lyla Bennett McCurdy of Union City; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Glenn Jones of Norcross, and Margaret and Ernest Sauders of Hoschton; one son and daughter-in-law, William and Anita McCurdy of Daytona Beach, FL: one stepdaughter and son-in-law, Kim and Steven Ekstrom of Paris, TX; two sisters, Monteen Winkleman of LeHigh Acres, FL and Blondine Andrews of Rainesville, AL; two brothers, William McCurdy of Braselton and George Wesley McCurdy of Royston; thirteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Christian City Convalescent Center in Union City, GA or to the Alzheimer's Association.
