OBITUARIES Story last updated at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 James W. Curtis Athens James Woodrow Curtis James Woodrow Curtis, of 110 Tipperary Road, Athens died July 9, 2001. He was the son of the late Mr. James H. and Lela Brownlow Curtis. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathryn Curtis Trogdon. James Curtis was born in Arapalo, Oklahoma, on April 15, 1917. His family returned to Georgia two years later and he grew up in Gainesville and Toccoa. Mr. Curtis received his BA degree from the University of Georgia in 1938 and a LLB degree in 1940. While attending the University he was president of Sigma Mu fraternity, president of the Junior Class, vice president of the student YMCA, vice president of the Panhellenic Council, a member of the Senior Round Table, Gridiron, Blue Key, Scabbard and Blade, the Law School Honor Council, Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity and the Demosthenian Society. He was also on the Intercollegiate Swimming team. After graduation from law school and passing the Georgia Bar Exam he spent more than 40 years in public service. In the fall of 1940 he became a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and retired after 26 years of service. He was assigned to Los Angeles, Ca., Portland, Ore., Buenos Aires, Argentina, Lima, Peru, Managua, Nicaragua, Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and St. Louis, Mo. He was the legal attache in the American Embassy in Managua, Nicaragua, and also in Lima, Peru. While in Managua he married Ruth Williams, a native Georgian who was in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. After retiring from the FBI in 1966, Jim Curtis became the Director of the Institute of Continuing Education in Georgia from 1967-1982. He served two terms as president of the national organization of the Association of Continuing Legal Education Administrators. He received the Distinguished Award in Public Service from the University of Georgia and a Scroll of Appreciation from the University of Georgia Law School as well as awards from other legal organizations. Mr. Curtis was active in the Presbyterian Church both in St. Louis and in Athens. He taught Sunday school for many years and served as deacon and elder. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Athens. He was a member of the Georgia Bar Association, the Western Circuit Bar Association, the Georgia Bar Historical Society, the Law School Association, a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a member of the Athens Country Club. Survivors include his wife, Ruth Williams Curtis of Athens, Ga.; three sons, James W. Curtis Jr. and daughter-in-law Tommie Gray Curtis of Fairfax, Va., Bruce W. Curtis, of Athens, Ga., and Lee W. Curtis of Ifrane, Morocco. A great- grandson, Robert Mathew Curtis, Fairfax, Va., and a granddaughter, Grace Curtis of Villa Rica, Ga. He is also survived by a nephew, George Trogdon of Lakemont, Ga., and a niece, Kay Trogdon Hightower of Thomaston, Ga., and several great-nieces and -nephews and one great-grandniece. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 6:20 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2001 Vivian Holbrook San Antonio, Texas Vivian Smith Holbrook, born March 6, 1915, to Bernice and Millard Smith, died Thursday, July 5, 2001. She graduated from Portland, Ore., High School, and attended Whitman College, Walla Walla, Wash. She moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where she met Lt. Thomas Holbrook who was then stationed at Wheeler Field. They returned to the U.S. at approximately the same time and both were on the West Coast. Their friendship flourished over the next year and they were married Jan. 3, 1942. Their marriage lasted 59 years and produced three children, Nancy Lynn, Thomas H. Jr. and Lawrence M. Over the course of Tom's Air Force career they lived in many foreign countries, including Japan, the Philippines, Paris, France and Guam. After Tom's retirement they lived in Athens, Ga., where she was active in the Presbyterian Church and did volunteer work at Athens General Hospital and Recordings for the Blind. In the fall of 1988, Tom and Vivian moved to Air Force Village II where she became active in the Dabblers and in the Juice Patrol at the Health Care Center. Because of many friendships, her life at the Village was one of the happiest periods in her life. She is survived by her husband, Col. Thomas H. Holbrook, USAF (Ret); sons, Thomas H. Holbrook Jr., Smyrna, Ga., and Lawrence M. Holbrook, Eugene, Ore.; daughter, Nancy H. Megley, Philadelphia, Pa.; and a sister, Beverly Howe, Eugene, Ore. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 9 at the Main Chapel at Air Force Village II, San Antonio, Texas.
