A native of Formosa, Ark., Mrs. Bowen was a daughter of the late Luke Edward Bond and Amy Robertson Bond, and was the widow of James Winford Bowen. She was of the Baptist faith, was a homemaker and was retired as a cook and a baker. Services were held Saturday at Berry Funeral Home, Elberton, with the Rev. Billy Owensby officiating. Burial will be in Elmhurst Cemetery, Elberton. She was the daughter of Grove I. and Mae Forrester Woodruff. She received her B.S., M.Ed. and Ed.D. degrees from the University of Georgia. For some years she was a public school teacher in several Georgia school systems. Then, from 1958 through 1977, she taught in the College of Education at the University of Georgia, retiring in 1977 as an emeritus member of the University of Georgia faculty. Mrs. Cromartie was a member of United Methodist Church in Walnut Grove, Georgia, where she grew up. She was also a member of the University of Georgia Retirees Association, the Athens Area Retired Educators Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. She is survived by a sister, Carmen W. Crouch, Columbus, Georgia; a niece, Gail C. Hamlin, Douglasville, Georgia; a nephew and his wife, Jim and Anne Crouch, Columbus, Georgia. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2001 Charles Joseph Eckenrode Athens Charles Joseph Eckenrode, 87, of Athens, died Sunday, March 4, 2001. Born near Emmitsburg, Md., he was a son of the late Charles and Mary Eckenrode. After graduating from Mount St. Mary's College, he later received a master's degree from the University of Maryland. A lifelong educator, his teaching career began at Emmitsburg Public High School in 1935, followed by a move to Principal at the National Training School for Boys in Washington D.C. Next came a three year stint with the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. Upon returning to civilian life, he dovetailed his commitment to education into two distinguished careers: first as a supervisor of education in various institutions with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Department of Justice, followed by a position at UGA in the sociology department. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 17, 2001 at the UGA Catholic Center. Father Jack McDowell will officiate. Survivors include his wife, Jessie Shipley Eckenrode of Athens; a son, Charles J. Eckenrode of Keeline, Wyo.; a daughter, Virginia K. A native of Charlottesville, Va., Mr. Lawson was a son of Betty Lee Lamb Lawson of District Heights, Md. and the late T.R. Lawson. He was a graduate of Gainesville College and Brenau College with a bachelor degree in criminal justice, and was a retired correctional sergeant and owner/operator of the Tasty Dog Cafe in Jefferson from 1972-1985. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy to be certified as a law enforcement officer. He worked for the Jefferson Police Department and Police Departments in surrounding towns. He was chief of police in Bogart before becoming a corrections officer. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections Davis Detention Center as a sergeant in 1988. He was of the Christian faith. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Plank officiating. Burial will be in Galilee Christian Church cemetery, Jefferson.
