Finnerty, age 71, of Athens, Ga. and Keokuk, Iowa, passed away on March 10, 2001. A scientist and educator of considerable renown, Dr. Finnerty was professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology at the University of Georgia from 1968 to 1988. In addition to his academic appointments, he received numerous awards for scientific achievement throughout a distinguished career and was listed in American Men of Science, Who's Who in the South and Southeast, and Who's Who in Frontier Science and Technology, among others. In 1996, Dr. Finnerty had the profound honor of having a newly discovered biochemical pathway named for him in recognition of his remarkable body of work. He leaves behind Margaret, his wife of 47 years, and six children: Deb, Steve, Carrie, Beth, Todd and Stan, and their respective spouses; and eight grandchildren. He will be missed by them all. Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, March 13 in Keokuk. A memorial service will be held in Athens on March 31 at 2:00 p.m. at the Catholic Center. Bondy Holcombe, USAFR, 79, 103 Woodhaven Place died Sunday March 11, 2001. A native of Cherokee County, Col. Holcombe was the son of the late Earby W. and Flossie Ridings Holcombe. He was a career Air Force officer retiring after 30 years of service. He earned numerous distinguished service medals, awards, commendations, including a Bronze Star and a National Defense Service Medal. After serving in Puerto Rico in World War II, he returned to civilian life to earn his BBA degree from the University of Georgia where he was a distinguished military graduate and a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Returning to the Air Force, he was assigned to budget and accounting at Hill Air Force Base, Utah. The Air Force then assigned him to the University of Michigan where he earned an MBA degree. He then became Chief Financial Analysis Officer at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. The next assignments were Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at the University of Georgia, then becoming a member of the Air University faculty at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. As a member of the Inspector General's team he was assigned to Norton Air Force Base, California. In 1968 he became the Senior Vietnamese Advisor for the Air Training Command in Nah Trang, Vietnam. Following this tour of duty he was then chosen by the Air Force to return to the University of Georgia where he received his Doctoral degree. Named to the Air War College faculty at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama, and then Headquarters Deputy Chief of Staff for education, he neared the completion of his service career, but not until he returned to his beloved University of Georgia as Commander of Aerospace Studies. He was a member of the Athens First Baptist Church, the UGA Chapter of the Gridiron Society, Athens Rotary Club, served on the Alumni Board of Directors for the University of Georgia and was a member of the Athens Area Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Ann Ledbetter Holcombe, Athens; daughters, Debbie Murwin, Athens, Kymy Pruitt, Watkinsville and Heidi Reynolds, Lawrenceville; a sister, Hazel Wyatt, Atlanta; brothers, Coy Holcombe, Ball Ground, Basil Holcombe, Waleska and Bryce Holcombe, Atlanta; grandchildren, Morgan Pruitt, Mary Kate Murwin, Kristopher Pruitt, Thomas Murwin, Will Reynolds and James Reynolds. A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church with Dr. Jon Appleton, Rev. G. Richard Hoard and Rev. Mark Fite officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C., with full military honors.
