OBITUARIES Story last updated at 11:20 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2001 'Dock' McLocklin Statham Ernest L. ''Dock'' McLocklin, 88, of 1553 Doc McLocklin Road, Statham, Georgia died Friday, May 11, 2001 at his home. A Statham native, Mr. McLocklin was born to the late Mae Boyd McLocklin and John Nathaniel McLocklin, and was the widower of Mrs. Vera Sims McLocklin. Two brothers, James McLocklin and Chester McLocklin preceded in him death. Mr. McLocklin was a farmer, agribusiness leader, churchman and family man. A veteran of WWII, Dock returned to Statham after his discharge from the U.S. Army to farm, his lifelong vocational passion. He cooperated with other farmers in Barrow County to start the Farmer's Mutual Exchange (''Co-op Store'') later to become known as Gold Kist and served as it's manager until it became a stable business. In 1954, he began his employment with Production Credit Association and served most of his 20 years with PCA as Agency Director. He retired in 1974 to return to full time farming. In his retirement he remained very active in church, civic and agribusiness activities. He was a faithful member of Statham Baptist Church, and was proud to provide service to several organizations, including the Board of Directors of Jackson Electric Membership Cooperative, Oglethorpe Power, Barrow County Chamber of Commerce, Barrow County and Georgia Cattleman's Association, North East Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission, Georgia Council of Farm Cooperatives, Oconee River Soil and Water Conservation District, and Future Farmers of America Alumni Association. Dock was a charter member of the first FFA chapter formed in the state of Georgia. In these and other organizations, he served leadership roles and received many Distinguished Service Awards. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Boyd and Susan McLocklin; a sister, Odanious Lackey; brothers, Euranous, C.W. and Bunt McLocklin; granddaughters, Cyndi White, Millie Calhoun, and Abby McLocklin; great-grandchildren, Jesse and Emily White and Stephanie and Nicholas Calhoun; and many nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 11:20 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2001 Judy Marlowe Mitchell Jefferson Judy Marlowe Mitchell, age 52 of Jefferson, Georgia lost her battle to cancer after 13 years on Friday morning, May 11, 2001. She was a native of Jefferson, Georgia and lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She was outgoing, always mindful of the needs of others, dedicated to her family and friends and loved the beach. Judy was preceded in death by her father, N.C. ''Buck'' Marlowe and brother, Donald Marlowe. Judy is survived by her mother, Grace Jarrett Marlowe of Jefferson. The wife of Billy Mitchell of Jefferson, Ga.; daughters and sons-in-law, Kellie M. and Tom Fletcher of Athens, Ga.; Karen M. and John Canupp of Gainesville, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Patty Mitchell of Jefferson, Ga.; brother, Eddie Jarrett Marlowe of Jefferson, Ga.; sister, Jackie Marlowe McElwee of Athens, Ga.; sister-in-law, Jackie Brooks of Pendergrass, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Alex Kinney, Connor Kinney, Brittany Fletcher, T.D. Fletcher, Will Fletcher, Craigan Mitchell and Chanzlee Mitchell. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. from the First Baptist Church of Jefferson with Dr. Mickey Kirkindoll, Rev. Cary Hillard and Claire Adams Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers are John Marlowe, Brad Marlowe, Andy Marlowe, Steve Marlowe, Wade Wilkes, Judd Wilkes, Mitch Mitchell and Tom Carter. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 11:20 p.m. on Friday, May 11, 2001 McLocklin leaves long legacy in agribusiness for region, state Staff Reports Ernest L. ''Dock'' McLocklin, who had a strong influence on the Barrow County agricultural and business community, died Friday at his home in Statham. McLocklin, 88, was one of the initial partners in the farmer's cooperative store on Atlanta Highway which started as the Farmer's Mutual Exchange, later conducted business as Gold Kist and most recently was bought out by Southern States. ''He was an innovator in the agricultural field, a good cattle farmer and very progressive,'' said Doug Garrison, retired Northeast Georgia district director for the Cooperative Extension Service. ''He was a highly respected individual in (Barrow) county who meant a lot to the agricultural community. ''He was instrumental in helping me organize the first cattleman's association in Barrow County,'' he said. A veteran of World War II, McLocklin left the Army after the war and returned to Statham to farm, which his family described as his lifelong passion. In 1954 he began working with the Production Credit Association and served most of his 20 years with PCA as agency director. He retired from the PCA in 1974 to farm full time. McLocklin served on the boards of Jackson Electric Membership Cooperative, Oglethorpe Power, Barrow County Chamber of Commerce, Barrow County and Georgia Cattleman's Association, Northeast Georgia Area Planning and Development Commission, Georgia Council of Farm Cooperatives, Oconee River Soil and Water Conservation District and the Future Farmers of America Alumni Association. He was also a charter member of the first FFA chapter formed in Georgia. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Smith Funeral Home in Winder.
