He was 87. Hewlett, who suffered a stroke in 1993, died in his sleep, HP spokesman Dave Berman said. Hewlett started the company with his friend and partner, the late David Packard. As its engineering brain, Hewlett saw the company grow from a start-up that made ''anything to bring in a nickel'' to a $49 billion manufacturer of high-quality computers and scientific instruments. He was a former Habersham County School Superintendent and a former Rotary Club member. He was a member of NEA, GAE, HAE and AARP and North Georgia Technical School Advisory Board. He was a member and deacon for over 35 years at Hazel Creek Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and director. Born January 6, in Macon, Georgia, Mrs. Johnson was a daughter of Dock Woodard and Annie Lee Cole Woodard. A longtime resident of Athens, Mrs. Johnson attended Wesleyan Conservatory in Macon. During her years in Athens, she became a great fan of Georgia football, basketball, and tennis. She enjoyed playing tennis and was a volunteer for the NCAA Tennis finals when they were held in Athens. She was also an avid bridge player and active participant in the Roadrunners. She co-founded the Bridal Gallery in 1977 with friends Amanda Thompson and Mary Beth McDonald. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Although the true focus of her life was her family, she found time to volunteer within the church and community. Her kind smile and gentle manner was a joy to those around her and she will be missed by all. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Cecil L. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:08 p.m. on Friday, January 12, 2001 Helen Rose Johnson Turnbull Atlanta Helen Rose Johnson Turnbull (Mrs. James Foster) died Thursday, January 11, following an extended illness. A native of Athens and a fifth generation Georgian, she was born December 20, 1918 to Cicero and Bessie Mae Johnson. Her mother died five days later, having succumbed to complications from the delivery and the 1918 Flu epidemic. Her father's remarriage three years later, ultimately led to Mrs. Turnbull's adoption by her aunt and uncle, also Athenians and her parents siblings. In that home she found deep and abiding love which offered her a rich and happy life growing up in Athens among family and friends. She and her cousin, Harriet Louelle Johnson Marbury, who became closer than a sister, enjoyed a lifetime of friendship until her untimely death 32 years ago. She maintained an active single life filled with friends, family, and travel. Helen Rose Johnson wed James Foster Turnbull of Bishop, GA on March 30, 1950 at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Anderson, SC. The marriage lasted 50 years, ending with Mr. Turnbull's death July 2, 2000. They moved with her husband in 1950 where Mr. Turnbull began a long career with the Lockheed George Corporation. They located first in Buckhead, and moved later to Brookhaven. Children followed in 1955 and 1957, and with that, rich and happy years focused on her family. Active in civic, charitable, and school affairs for many years, Mrs. Turnbull served with her late husband as Co-President of the Sequoyah High School PTA, and was a charter organizer of Boy Scout Pack 267 in Brookhaven. She was a founding member of the Whispering Hills Garden Club, and for many years organized Christmas gift-giving for the Southern Christian Home for Children. Her life's passions were family, music, good friends, and travel. She flew in open cockpit airplanes with Georgia Aviation Pioneer Ben Epps at the controls, toured the US by transcontinental trains and planes, enjoyed countless ocean cruises and crossed the Atlantic four times to experience London, the English countryside, and Paris. In later years, she divided her time between home in Atlanta and Hilton Head, SC. She maintained an unbreakable spirit and will, and lived her life well. She is survived by her sons, Michael Foster and James Richard Turnbull, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Turnbull, grandchildren, Grayson Foster and Madeline Elizabeth, former daughter-in-law, Alicia Diane Jacobson, all of Atlanta, two half sisters, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and a special niece, Amy Cooksey Kias of Athens. Funeral rites are scheduled for 11 am Saturday January 13, 2001 at Brookhaven Christian Church, Atlanta, with the Rev. Anne Bonney officiating, assisted by Dr. Mike Cordle of St. Mark United Methodist Church, and at 3 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Athens, with Dr. Bill Britt reading the Service of Death and Ressurection.
