A native of Statham, Mr. Martin was a son of the late Andrew L. and Elizabeth Arnold Martin and was the widower of Cora M. Martin. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eva Jane Martin, and by two sons, Harold Martin Jr. and James D. Martin. He was a farmer and was a member of Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Wise-Connolly Funeral Home with Pastor Jennifer Horton and the Rev. Wilburn M. Hill officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church cemetery. Survivors include three daughters, Jean Williamson and Joanne Bennett, both of Winder, and Sara J. Hill, Rutledge; four sons, John Martin, Monroe, Joseph Martin, Ellenwood, Jerry Martin and Wayne Martin, both of Winder; a sister, Margarite Fisher, Doraville; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:03 p.m. on Monday, March 12, 2001 John Newton Lawson Jefferson John Newton Lawson, age 65, of 1874 Possum Creek Road, Jefferson, Ga. 30549, died Friday, March 9, 2001. A native of Charlottesville, Va., Mr. Lawson was a son of Betty Lee Lamb Lawson of District Heights, Md. and the late T.R. Lawson. He was a graduate of Gainesville College and Brenau College with a bachelor degree in criminal justice, and was a retired correctional sergeant and owner/operator of the Tasty Dog Cafe in Jefferson from 1972-1985. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Northeast Georgia Police Academy to be certified as a law enforcement officer. He worked for the Jefferson Police Department and Police Departments in surrounding towns. He was chief of police in Bogart before becoming a corrections officer. He was retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections IW Davis Detention Center as a sergeant in 1998. He was of the Christian faith. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jackson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Plank officiating. Burial will be in Galilee Christian Church cemetery, Jefferson.
