OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:32 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2001 Thomas Banks Carnesville Thomas Verner Banks, 79, of 8586 Sandy Cross Road died Monday, May 14, 2001. A native of Stephens County, Mr. Banks was a son of the late William Groves and Ethel Irene Banks. He was retired from Westinghouse Corporation where he was an employee for 20 years. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. As a First Class Petty Officer he served on LST crafts, and saw action in Sicily, Italy, and the Normandy Invasion, and later the Pacific invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was a member of the Riverside Baptist Church. Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Riverside Baptist Church with Revs. Lee Smith, Truitt Brawner, Clint Harper, and Charles Honea officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Royston Banks; a daughter, Elaine Banks Honea, Carnesville; two sons, Thomas A. Banks and Lanny Banks, both of Royston; a sister, Irene Callahan, Greenville, S.C.; a brother, Truitt R. Mrs. Duncan was born in Elbert County, Ga., and was a daughter of the late William Isham and Pearl Maxwell Booth. She was a music teacher and a member of Bowman Baptist Church where she was a pianist and organist for over 40 years. Her husband was the late John Martin Duncan. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-laws, Percy and Doyle Mitchell, Monroe, and Carolyn and George Moore, McDonough; a sister, Haga Burden, Bowman; grandchildren, Sharon and David Moore, Kim Moore, all of McDonough, Kathy and Steven Moore, Fayetteville, Dawn and Gawyn Mitchell, Columbus, MS., Jaye and George Goddard, Kennesaw, Sheryl and Billy Mitchell, and Clay Mitchell, all of Monroe; a granddaughter-in-law, Kathy Moore; 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:33 p.m. on Monday, May 14, 2001 Ellis 'Billie' Garrett Athens Ellis ''Billie'' Garrett, 84, of 220 Devonshire Drive, died May 13, 2001. A native of Charing, Ga., he was a son of the late Robert Lester and Janie Terry Garrett. He was a 1934 graduate of Butler High School and 1938 of the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture. He was manager of Athens Co-op Creamery from 1944-1953 and organized the Southeastern Co-operative Association. Mr. Garrett taught school in Oconee County for 7 years and was a member of Oconee County Teachers Association. Mr. Garrett was founder of The Ellis Corporation and was a long-time business man in the Athens area. He was a charter member of Classic City Lions Club, where he served as President in 1977-78, and received the Distinguished Service Award in 1986-87. He was recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award for humanitarian service from Lions Club International Foundation. He was a member of various civic and community organizations, including Mt. Vernon Lodge, UGA Agriculture Alumni Association, Lifetime member of FFA, Sons of the American Revolution and Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Athens and the Forum Sunday School Class where he was past president. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at 11:00 AM at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Bill Britt and Rev. Grady Wigley officiating. Internment will be Thursday, May 17, 2001, at 1:30 PM at Bloodworth Cemetery, Charing, GA with Rev. Frank Terry officiating. Pallbearers will be J.R. Garrett, Dallas Cannady, Sammie Parkman, Dan Deaton, Michael Hyatt, and Doyle Ashley.
