Funeral services for Margaret Freeman Roscoe, age 77, widow of J.W. Roscoe who died April 15, 2001 will be held Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. from the Emmanuel Baptist Church. Rev. John Hamilton and Dr. Richard Bailey will officiate. Burial will be in the Westview Memorial Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home. Visitation will be Monday 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Roscoe was born in Chesterfield County a daughter of the late John and Leona Gibson Freeman. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:59 a.m. on Monday, April 16, 2001 Carolyn R. Payton Peace Corps director WASHINGTON -- Carolyn R. Payton, the Peace Corps' first woman and black director, died Wednesday at her Washington home of a heart attack. She was 75. Payton was named to head the volunteer organization by President Carter in 1977. Before resigning in 1978 over policy differences, she focused on minority recruitment. The Peace Corps, founded in 1961, sends volunteers on humanitarian missions overseas. Payton was retired from Howard University, where she was director of counseling services.
