Box 358, died Saturday, July 14, 2001. A native of Karachi, India, Mrs. Nixon was a daughter of the late George and Phyllis Batson Davis, and was the widow of George William Nixon. She was a World War II veteran who served in the European Theater, was a retired merchandising executive with Sterns Brothers, was a member of Amvets and was a past senior vice president of VFW Post Sunset. A private services will be held at a later date. Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Hope James, Wharton, N.J.; three sons, George Donald Nixon, Kernersville, N.C., James William Nixon, Houston, Texas, and David Alan Nixon, Danielsville; two sisters, Hope Mason and Lorraine Potter, both of New Smyrna, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:39 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2001 The Rev. Luther Kay Hartwell The Rev. Luther Louis Kay, 81, of 48 Janice Drive, died Sunday, July 15, 2001. A native of Franklin County, Mr. Kay was a son of the late Floyd Louis and Naomi Welborn Kay, and was preceded in death by a daughter, Betty Kay, and a son, Louis Kay. He was a World War II marine veteran who served at Iwo Jima and received a Purple Heart. He was a former pastor of Old Canon Baptist Church, Goss Baptist Church and Faith Baptist Church, and was the retired Chaplain at Hart County Hospital. He was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, Hebron Baptist Association and Hart County Ministerial Association. He attended Reed Creek Baptist Church where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class and the Golden Agers. Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Reed Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Jason Danuser, Wayne Durden and Jim Winn officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Hembree Kay; a daughter, Annette Moorhead, Hartwell; two brothers, James Kay, Royston, and Floyd Kay Jr., Canon; six sisters, Nellie Hembree, Nancy Paxton and Shirley Martin, all of Hartwell, Leila Vaughn and Imogene Campbell, both of Royston, and Frances Fleming, Greenville, S.C.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Nephews will serve as pallbearers and the Men's Sunday School Class and the Hart County Ministerial Association will serve as honorary pallbearers. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:38 p.m. on Sunday, July 15, 2001 Jessie Julia Mize Athens Dr. Jessie Julia Mize Dr. Jessie Julia Mize, 90, died July 15, 2001. She was the only child of Charles and Leila Ritchie Mize. She was born in Commerce, Ga. on September 14, 1910. Dr. Mize graduated from Commerce High School in 1926, attended the Georgia State Teachers' College in Athens for two years. Following this, she studied at the University of Georgia and received the following degrees: Bachelor of Science (Physics), 1930; Master of Science (Mathematics), 1931; and Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, 1932. She held a graduate teaching assistantship in the Physics Department, University of Georgia during 1930-1931. Later graduate study was at Columbia University, New York City, N.Y.; Iowa State College, Ames, Iowa; and Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. From the latter institution she received a Doctorate of Philosophy degree in June 1952. Dr. Mize was a lifelong educator. From 1932-1934 she taught in rural Berrien County, Georgia, and from 1934 she served in various county and district positions with the Farmer's Home Administration in Georgia. She was Executive Secretary, Georgia Nutrition Committee, during part of World War II, under the War Food Administration. From 1945 until 1949 she held various county and special assignments with the Georgia Agricultural Extension Service, Home Demonstration work. From 1952 until her retirement from the University of Georgia in May 1974, she was the head of Housing and Home Management Department in the College of Home Economics. Dr. Mize was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi and Pi Lambda Theta. She was also a fifty-year plus member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as regent and honorary regent in the Elijah Clarke Chapter of the DAR. She also held many leadership positions on the state and national levels. Dr. Mize served as president of the Daughters of Colonial Wars in Ga. She was an active member of the Georgia and American Family and Consumer Services Association, and of the University of Georgia Alumni Association as well as the Alumni Association of the College of Family and Consumer Sciences. Dr. Mize was a genealogist who authored family histories as well as ''History of Banks County 1858-1976,'' ''The History of the Home Economics Department at the University of Georgia,'' and ''The History of the First Presbyterian Church of Athens, Ga.'' Dr. Mize held a lifelong membership at Commerce Presbyterian Church and was an affiliate member of First Presbyterian Church of Athens since 1925. She is survived by cousins and many friends in Athens. Services will be held at Bridges Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Tom Lewis of Commerce Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Gray Hill Cemetery in Commerce, Ga. Family and friends will receive visitors from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. prior to the service.
