A native of Emmanuel County, Mrs. Drake was a daughter of the late Joe Knight and Emma Knight Lawrence and was the widow of Derry Drake. She was preceded in death by a son, Calvin Leonard Drake. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:57 p.m. on Friday, February 16, 2001 Dr. Alexander Woodson Ashford Watkinsville Dr. Alexander Woodson Ashford of Watkinsville, GA died February 15, 2001. A native of Watkinsville, he was born June 14, 1922 and was the son of the late Clinton Alexander Ashford and Constance Schley Ashford. A graduate of Athens High School, he was president of his senior class. He graduated from the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia where he specialized in general surgery. Dr. Ashford served as a Lt. Col. in the United States Regular Army until his retirement. During his tenure he was a physician on a troop train carrying wounded in Korea as well as on a troop transport ship. During his career, he also served in Turkey, Lebanon and Eritrea. While stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital, he was on the surgical team for then President Dwight D. Eisenhower and helped care for ''Ike'' during his convalescence. He was sent by the State Department in 1961 to Taiz, Yemen to provide medical care of the King of Yemen after an assassination attempt. The King of Imam as he was called, was friendly toward the United States and this country was anxious that he should recover. His final duty was as Chief of Surgery at the Ft. McPherson Army Hospital in Atlanta. After his retirement from the army, he practiced in Monroe, GA until his retirement in 1988. Since then he has pursued his hobby of farming and the study of immunology. Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday in the Watkinsville City Cemetery. The Rev. Thomas Elliott will officiate. Dr. Ashford is survived by his widow: Carol Richardson Ashford of Monroe; three sisters: Virginia Elliott, Constance Wright and Vivian Van Horne, all of Atlanta; one brother: Dr. John Ashford of Belvedere, CA as well as 15 nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Benson Bolen Vandegriff and the widow of Ned LeRoy Little. Mrs. Little was a member of the First Christian Church, where she served as a Deacon and was a member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School class. She was a member of the St. Mary's Auxiliary and had served as Treasurer of the organization. Mrs. Little was an avid gardener and was a member of the Rose and Dahlia Garden Club, the Northeast Georgia Rose Society, the Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, and was a Life Member of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. She was a member of the Laura Rutherford Chapter #88 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of Road-Runners. In earlier years, she enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and traveling. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and John Scoggins and Sara and Richard Marbut, all of Athens; four grandchildren, Gregory Ann Woodruff, Brannon Chappell, Laurie Marbut Otte, and Richard David Marbut; and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Mangleburg Bell; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sara V. Henderson, and a brother, Harry Vandegriff. Services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church with Dr. Ray Austin officiating.
