He was a retired large group auditor for the Internal Revenue Service and was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:13 p.m. on Monday, July 16, 2001 James R. Farmer Athens James R. Farmer, Jr., 86, of Athens died Sunday, July 15, 2001, following a period of declining health. A native of Elberton, Mr. Farmer was the son of the late James R. and Arlie R. Farmer. He was a longtime service manager of Trussell Ford in Athens and retired from the University of Georgia Physical Plant. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Ordinance Corps in Italy and North Africa. He retired as a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army Reserve. Mr. Farmer was a charter member and deacon of Milledge Avenue Baptist Church. He served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Athens. He was a member of the Athens City Club and the Athens Country Club. Mr. Farmer was a numismatist and an avid golfer. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Estelle Cox Farmer, of Athens; brothers and sisters-in-law: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Farmer, Elberton, and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Farmer, Abbeville, S.C.; sister-in-law, Lois Cox, Gainesville; brother-in-law, Frank W. DeLong, Jr., of Bradenton, Fla.; nephews and nieces: Bob Farmer, Jim Farmer, Travis Farmer, Len Farmer, Bobby Chambers, Frank W.
