OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:43 p.m. on Saturday, February 17, 2001 John Phillip Jones Duluth Mr. John Phillip Jones, age 82, of Duluth, Ga., died Friday, February 16, 2001, at Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth after suffering a stroke January 9. Mr. Jones was born in Maywood, Ill., December 11, 1918 and had resided in the Atlanta area since 1962. The son of the late Rev. Dr. Thomas J. and Mrs. Sarah Jones, he was a decorated WWII First Lieutenant in the 94th infantry division serving in both the Pacific and European Theatres where he received the Bronze Star. He also received the Purple Heart for being wounded in France. Mr. Jones was a brother of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity at Bucknell University, a 32 degree Master Mason, member of Mahonning Lodge in New Castle, Penn., and retired from Universal Rundle Corporation as the southeastern sales regional manager after 35 years of service. He was an active member of Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Davis Jones; sons and daughters-in-law, John Roderick and Marion Jones, Thomas Phillip and Cathy Jones, and Jeffrey Rhys Jones; and grandchildren, Todd Ashley Jones and Johnna Leigh Jones. Funeral services will be held Monday, February 19 at 1 p.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gray Norsworthy and Chaplain (LTC) William B. Carr officiating. Mrs. Little was a member of the First Christian Church, where she served as a Deacon and was a member of the J.O.Y. Sunday School class. She was a member of the St. Mary's Auxiliary and had served as treasurer of the organization. Mrs. Little was an avid gardener and was a member of the Rose and Dahlia Garden Club, the Northeast Georgia Rose Society, the Friends of the State Botanical Garden of Georgia, and was a life member of The Garden Club of Georgia, Inc. She was a member of the Laura Rutherford Chapter #88 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was a member of Road-Runners. In earlier years, she enjoyed playing golf, bridge and traveling. Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and John Scoggins and Sara and Richard Marbut, all of Athens; four grandchildren, Gregory Ann Woodruff, Brannon Chappell, Laurie Marbut Otte and Richard David Marbut; and five great-grandchildren; a sister, Martha Mangleburg Bell; and nieces and nephews.
