OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:14 p.m. on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 Joseph A. Merola Athens Joseph A. Merola, born November 18, 1928, in Bridgeport, Conn., died Sunday, July 15, 2001, in Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Carmela Merola, and a brother, Joseph. He is survived by his beloved sister: Catherine Macisco of Connecticut; four brothers and sisters-in-law: Gaetona and Augustine Merola, Nicholas and Kathleen Merola, Anthony and Rose Merola, all of Connecticut, and Salvatore and Diane Merola, of Georgia. He will be sadly missed and always remembered by his nieces, nephews, great- and great-great nieces and nephews and his pet bird. Joseph was a member of Scout troop 34 of Bridgeport, Conn., and an assistant cub master. Joseph was very proud of being a veteran and serving his country. He served in Korea in 1952 as a member of the famous Wolfhounds. He was an active member of the VFW in Connecticut and VFW Post 2872 in Georgia. He also belonged to the 3rd order of St. Frances. He worked many years for Fletcher Thomson Inc. Joseph will be remembered for his acts of kindness, sense of humor, abundance of patience, compassion for others, and his volunteer activities in which he provided service for the less fortunate. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday at the UGA Catholic Center with the Father Edward Stafford TOR and Deacon Jim Gaudin officiating.
