She was retired from Rocky River Textile Plant where she was a twister. A native of Jackson County, Mr. Gober was the son of the late Henry Brannon Gober and Ruby Minish Gober. He received a BS degree in Ag Engineering from the University of Georgia. He received his MS degree from Cornell University at Ithaca, NY. He served two years in Korea with the Signal Corp. He was an independent insurance agent for 42 years. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Kathryn Thompson of Athens; son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Sonya Gober of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Kay and Rabun Neal of Greensboro; granddaughters, Lauren and Elizabeth Neal, one grandson, Chandler Gober; sister and brother-in-law, Estell and Doug Kidd of Jackson, GA; and several nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 Eric R. Hodsdon Commerce Eric R. Hodsdon, 46, of Commerce died July 6, 2001, at Atlanta Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 30, 2001. Eric was a 1974 graduate of Commerce High School. As a member of the tennis team he was the undefeated singles champion for four consecutive years. Eric, like his father and older brother, was an Eagle Scout. He was a member of Commerce Troup 35. After High School Eric worked as an Emergency Medical Technician. Eric spent a short time in the U.S. Army where he trained as a Chef and played the final five games of the Fort's football team as the walk-on quarterback after their quarterback suffered an arm injury. The team had a record of 0 wins and 5 losses before Eric took the reins and led the team to a five-game winning streak. Eric scored a total of 11 touchdowns playing both quarterback on offense and linebacker on defense. Eric took top honors and received the ''Most Valuable Player'' award at the Annual Fort Jackson football banquet held at the end of the season. After his discharge from the service Eric left Commerce for several years and lived in Corpus Christi, Texas, where he was employed by the ''Ship Ahoy'' restaurant. He returned to Commerce in the early 90's where he lived until his death on July 6th. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m., Friday July 20, 2001, at Ivie Funeral Home in Commerce at which time the family will receive friends. She was 76. Born in Marietta, she was the wife of Courtney Barrow Spratlin, and the daughter of the late Luther E. and Alma Maggie King Harris. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two brothers, Lenton Edsel Harris of Marietta, and Julius Marcell Harris, of Lincoln, Ala. Also five children, 10 grandchildren and one great-grandson as follows: son Courtney Zachery Spratlin, grandchildren, Zachery and Kay, and great-grandson, Christian; daughter Shay Spratlin Craig, and granddaughter, Arden; daughter Clissa Spratlin England, granddaughters Elspeth, Leatha and Emmalyne; son Stacey Barrow Spratlin and grandsons, Joshua and Jordan; son Blayne Harris Spratlin and grandchildren, Seth and Rachel. Leatha Spratlin was a graduate of Winterville High School, Class of 1942, and lived in the Winterville area most of her life. She retired as Department Secretary of the Educational Psychology Dept. at the University of Georgia. She was very active in early years in the Primary Department and with Vacation Bible School at Winterville First Baptist Church, and was an officer in many school PTAs, earning an honorary lifetime membership award. The family is at the Courtney Spratlin residence in Winterville, and will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Lord and Stephens Funeral Home East on Lexington Road. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church of Winterville. Visitors will be received at the church after the service. A private family interment will be held later.
