OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:13 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001 Eulala Amos Athens Eulala Amos died on May, 18, 2001 at St. Mary's Hospital, Athens, Georgia. The daughter of John F. Amos and Verda Leedy Amos, Ms. Amos was born in Fredericktown, Ohio, on May 29, 1907. She attended Ashland College and began a teaching career immediately thereafter at Columbia School in Mount Vernon, Ohio from 1927 to 1938 and served as its principal from 1938 to 1943. She also taught art at Mount Vernon High School from 1943 until 1944, while attending Ohio State University in quest of a Bachelor of Science degree in education. In 1945 she received her degree from Ohio State and began teaching, while working on a master's degree in ceramics. Her thesis documented her discovery of a unique means of glazing with a silver amalgam, a characteristic of her pottery for which she is particularly known. In 1949, Lamar Dodd, having been impressed by her summer stint teaching at the University of Georgia in 1945, prevailed on Ms. Amos to accept his invitation to teach full-time at the University. She became an associate professor in 1956 and a full professor in 1966, teaching ceramics, crafts, and art education until her retirement as a professor emerita in 1970. During her career her work was included in several major exhibitions, among them the Art League Show in Columbus, Ohio, and the Butler Art Show in Youngstown, Ohio. Her ceramics were featured in a series of exhibitions in St. Paul, Minnesota, where one of her silver-inlaid pots received a Purchase Award; in the Decorative Arts-Ceramics series of exhibitions in Wichita, Kansas; and in exhibitions at Cornell University, the Smithsonian, and the Ceramic National Exhibition in Syracuse, New York. Ms. Amos received the award as''Woman of the Year in Art'' for Athens, Georgia in 1963, and in 1997 the Georgia Museum of Art hosted a retrospective of her work, entitled''Of Clay and Fire: The Pottery of Eulala Amos,'' inspired by a response Ms. Amos made to a student in 1996: ''Of clay we are made, and fire. This is true of the pots and of you and me and everybody else who lives and breathes.'' Ms. Amos is survived by her loving friend and companion of forty-nine years, Elizabeth Taylor Sheerer, and other many close and loving friends. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia, 90 Carlton Street, Athens, Georgia 30602-6719. Her friends will receive visitors on Saturday, May 19, and Sunday, May 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Lord and Stephens East, 4355 Lexington Road, Athens (706-546-1587) and a memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, in early June; the exact date and time to be announced.
