A lifelong resident of Atlanta, Dr. Allen was a son of the late John E. Allen and Lula Johnson Allen. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a medical corpsman attached to the fleet marines. He graduated from Emory University and the Medical College of Georgia. He interned in Washington, D.C., the Mayo Clinic, and at the Children's Hospital in Nashville. In 1955 he opened a pediatric practice in East Point. He retired from active practice in 1975 and was later employed as a physician by the State of Georgia. He retired from the state in 1990. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Westview Cemetery. Dr. Huff was born in Fort Worth, Texas in 1909 and graduated from Southern Methodist University with bachelor and masters degrees. He received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Illinois. He taught mathematics at SMU, the University of Texas, the University of Georgia and did research at Harvard before becoming Head of the Math Department at Georgia in 1952. Dr. Huff was Graduate Dean at Georgia from 1960-68. He was an avid tennis player who won numerous titles including state singles championships in Oklahoma and Arkansas in the 1930s. His wife of 63 years, the former Helen May Comstock, died in 1996. In 1945, they retired the Dallas, mixed doubles champions cup winning the title three times. Dr. Huff was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the American Mathematical Society, Mathematics Association of America, the Georgia Academy of Science, and the U.S. Professional Tennis Association. Dr. Huff moved to Northern Virginia in 1995 to be near family. He is survived by a son, Daniel Huff of Beaufort, S.C.; a daughter, Helen Williams of Falls Church, VA; two grandsons, David Williams of Annandale, VA, and Daniel Williams of Baltimore, MD; two great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 10:03 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2001 J.W. Lester Thomasville James William ''J.W.'' Lester, 92, died Thursday, April 12, 2001 in Thomasville. The funeral will be held at J.C. Green and Sons funeral home in Thomasville at 3 p.m., Saturday. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park in Greensboro. Born in Madison County, Georgia, on Nov. 11, 1908, he was the son of Reece C. Lester and Leila Mae Darnell Lester. He was a 1927 graduate of Royston (Ga.) High School. In the late 1930s, he and his family moved to Thomasville. In the early 1940s, they moved to Greensboro. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Susie Wood Lester; three sons and one daughter; James C. Lester of Richmond, Va.; Douglas J. Lester of Raleigh, N.C.; Frederick W. Lester of Coral Springs, Fla.; Margaret Lester Mock of Fredericksburg, Va.; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A resident of Greensboro for over 50 years, J.W. Lester worked in the automotive industry for Ingram Motor Co., Greensboro Ford and Green Ford. He also worked for Lambeth Construction Co. of Greensboro, from which he retired in 1970. Since 1995 he and his wife Susie made their home at Piedmont Retirement Center in Thomasville. He was a long-time member of The Church of God. In Greensboro he was active in the State Street Church of God for over 40 years where he served as assistant clerk for many years and later was an active member of Pinecroft Church of God. More recently he had been a member of Thomasville Church of God. J.W.'s surviving siblings include: Blanche Cartey, Eva Lee Spencer, Reece C. Lester, Jr., and Mary Betts of Athens, Ga. as well as Hassie Mae Freeman of Danielsville, Ga. Deceased siblings include Grace L. Pulliam, Sequart F. Lester and Coye R. Lester.
