OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:44 p.m. on Saturday, January 20, 2001 Stan Freeman Composer, comedian LOS ANGELES -- Stan Freeman, a pianist, composer, comedian and writer who had a ubiquitous presence in the New York nightclub scene of the 1950s and 1960s, has died. He was 80. Freeman, who died last Saturday, balanced his career among many areas of entertainment, including live performance, radio, television, Broadway and recordings. As his nightclub career grew in the early 1950s, Freeman became known as much for his comic persona as for his musical ability. He achieved a level of success at that time as an accompanist on numerous pop hits for singers like Rosemary Clooney and Percy Faith. He collaborated on the scores of two Broadway musicals, ''I Had a Ball,'' starring Lucille Ball, in 1964, and ''Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen,'' in 1970. During the 1970s, Freeman contributed material for the Mary Tyler Moore and Carol Burnett shows and in 1977-78 he shared an Emmy Award for a mini-musical parody he wrote for the Burnett show. -- Associated Press Šopyright 2001 Athens Newspapers Inc.
