A native of Wilkes County, Mrs. Colley was a daughter of the late Charlie Pope and Mary Stewart Pope, and was a widow of Willie Colley. She retired from the Wilkes County School System as a school teacher with 35 years of service. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church, and a Eastern Star of the Shiloh Academy #50. She was a member of Cedar Spring Baptist Church where she once served as the church clerk, served on the usher board and sang in the church choir. He was a member of Watkinsville Post 9147 VFW, BPOE, and Moose Lodge. He served on the Board of Directors at Oconee State Bank and was a member of Antioch Christian Church where he was Deacon Emeritus. Fielding and Becky Nunnally, both of Watkinsville; two sons, William E. OBITUARIES Story last updated at 9:32 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2001 Ray Burkett Winterville Maj. Ray Burkett, 89, of 148 Dudley Farm Road died Tuesday, June 19, 2001. A native of Jefferson County, Pa., Mr. Burkett was a son of the late Godfrey and Cathryn Hartman Burkett. He was preceded in death by a son, Lt. Col. Lawrence Burkett. He entered the service in 1931 and later served in the Panama Canal Zone, as well as the Ohio National Guard 145th Infantry 37th Division. He re-enlisted in 1943 and graduated from Officers Candidate School, Ft. Benning. Later, he was assigned to the 3rd Armored Division in Ft. Hood, Texas and served in European and Asian Theatres before retiring in 1959. After retirement, he raised Arabian horses in Alva, Fla. He was a member of Retired Officers and VFW. Services will be in Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors at a later date. Survivors include his wife, Mable Griffin Burkett; a stepson, Charles Griffin, Cincinnati, Ohio; two sisters, Dorothy Neal, Columbus, Ohio, and Ethel Gray, New Port Richey, Fla.; and a grandchild. Norris Bogart January 22, 1910 - June 20, 2001 Iva Hunter Norris was born Jan 22, 1910, near Statham, Georgia, in Barrow County. Her parents were Ivilla (Harrison) and William Stark Hunter II, who always lived in Barrow County where he farmed and was active in county and public school affairs. They had six children: Sallie (Mrs. Ples Wall) born July 1902, died 1997 at age 95: Johnnie (married Elsie McCormick) born July 1904, and lived in Burlington N.C. until his death in 1967 at age 63: Annie (Mrs. Roy Griffith) born January 28, 1905 and lived in Jefferson until her death in 1998 at age 93: William S. (Bill) married to Jimmie Ruth Ross born August 1908 and lived in Barrow County near Winder until his death in 1988: And Betty Ruth (Mrs. Henry L. Sheuerman) born Febuary 5, 1919 (now age 82) and has lived in St. Louis, Missouri for a number of years since her husband retired from Military service. Iva was married to John Clinton (J.C.) Norris who preceded Iva in death in 1976. They were married August 26, 1934 and moved to the farm on Jimmy Daniel Rd. in Oconee County where they both lived until their death. Their Children Donald hunter Norris and J. Wayne Norris both live on part of the original family farm-appropriately on Jimmy Daniel Rd. Norris Dr. (named for James W. (Jimmy) Daniel (born 1847) who was Clinton's Grandmothers brother). Iva and Clinton made their home in Oconee County all their lives and were both active members in Mars Hill Baptist Church for many years. Clinton was a master farmer and worked part-time as a Bogart school bus driver for a number of years before Bogart and Watkinsville consolidated into Oconee County Schools. He also was a substitute U.S. Mail Carrier for Bogart and knew everyone on his route. Iva worked for 11 years with the Bogart School Lunchroom program where she came to know all the children that attended Bogart for all those years. She and Clinton both lived basketball and attended all the games and many of the out of town games since Clinton drove the bus. Iva later worked for several years as Supervisor of the Housekeeping Department of Athens General Hospital (now Athens Regional Medical Center). Iva is succeeded by her two sons Don and Wayne, one granddaughter, Tracey Kell, Daughter of Don and Donetta-Two Grandsons-Eric and Patrick son of Wayne and Merle, and three great grandchildren (Tracey's two girls Deidra and Lauren, and one boy-Donald ''Donnie''. Another granddaughter Melissa (''Meli'') daughter of Don and Donetta tragically died in an automobile accident in 1983 at age 16. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2001, at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Lord and Stephens Funeral Home West, Bogart with the Rev. Charles Jones officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Deacons of Mars Hill Baptist Church.
