OBITUARIES Story last updated at 8:17 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2001 Lee Warren Johnson Jr. Former sheriff ALBANY -- A former Baker County sheriff who was convicted of income tax evasion and embezzlement has died. Lee Warren ''Scroot'' Johnson Jr., 55, died Monday of complications of pancreatic cancer. He was elected sheriff in 1976, succeeding his father, Warren ''Gator'' Johnson, who was sheriff for more than 20 years. The younger Johnson was convicted April 16, 1982, on three counts of evading more than $24,000 in personal income taxes from 1976 to 1978. He pleaded no contest to charges of embezzling more than $7,000 in Comprehensive Employment Training Act funds. He resigned as sheriff three weeks later. Lee Johnson served six months in jail. Before becoming sheriff, Lee Johnson had been chief deputy under his father for 10 years. Johnson is survived by his mother, Christine Johnson of Newton; a son, Josh Johnson of Camilla; a daughter and son-in law, Debbie and Tracy Rigsby of Camilla; a grandson, Nolan Rigsby of Camilla; two brothers and four sisters. A native of Oconee County, South Carolina, Mrs. Baugus was a daughter of the late William Ervin and Ella Susan Hare Lee and widow of Arthur Pate (A.P.) Baugus. She was the oldest charter member of Memorial Baptist Church in Watkinsville, where she taught Sunday School and worked in the nursery for many years. She was a homemaker. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Yvonne and Bill Christopher, Watkinsville; two sisters, Bessie Marshall, Athens and Julie Qundee, Grand Rapids, MI; grandchildren, Mike and Jan Christopher, and Phyllis and Ken Jennings, all of Watkinsville; nine great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Darrell Gilmer and the Rev. James Ashe officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. The remains will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Pallbearers will be John Michael Christopher, Mitchell Christopher, Tommy Cape, Hoyt Mauldin, Ronnie Hardigree, Eddie Hardigree, Judson Huff, Michael Gordon, and C.J. Jennings. Leathers & Sons and was a World War II captain with OSS. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens and was an avid golfer and ham radio operator. He was a graduate of Athens High School and Baylor Military Academy and attended UGA. He was a member of Kiwanis Club, was a charter member of Athens Country Club and was a board member of the GA Golf Association. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Oconee Hill Cemetery with Dr. Jon Appleton officiating. Survivors include a daughter, Linda L. Walker, Sandersville; two sons, Claude M. Leathers Jr., Arnoldsville, and Lee H. Leathers, Athens; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
